Supplementation of walnut in the diet of 13 postmenopausal women and five men also showed increased serum concentrations of linoleic acid (18 2co6) and a-linolenic acid (18 3co3), and decreased plasma total and LDL cholesterol concentrations [20]. Measurements of lipoprotein subclasses and particle size suggested that walnut supplementation lowered cholesterol preferentially in small LDL. However, the researchers of the same study also observed a decrease in HDL cholesterol concentrations, and they attributed it primarily to decreases of the large HDL particles [20].

A technique for the measurement of light scattered by a suspension of particles. The amount of light scattered is proportional to the number and size of the particles. Thus the light is measured at an angle to the direction of the incident light (cf. turbidi-metry, when transmitted light is measured). Nephelometric techniques are used for the measurement of lipoproteins and proteins (the latter by their reaction with a specific antibody to form immune complexes). 

A competitive ELISA assay for Lp(a) was recently described (Y4) in which the microtiter plate was coated with Lp(a) purified from a pool of donors. The method is simple and easy to perform, with satisfactory analytical parameters. A good stability and a reproducible coating of plates with the large Lp(a) lipoprotein is, however, critical in this type of assay. Wang et al. (W6) described an indirect sandwich assay for the measurement of Lp(a) in plasma and in dried blood spots, which can be applied to screening elevated Lp(a) levels in newborns (V3, V4).

Two assays have been developed for measuring the relative concentration of lipoprotein lipase activator in milk. Anderson (1979) developed an immunoassay and Super et al (1976) used [23H]glycerol triolein and measured the liberated [23H]glycerol. 

Concentrations of lipoprotein(a) were measured in 51 patients taking long-term carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, or valproate and 51 age- and sex-matched controls (133). Lipoprotein(a) concentrations were above 450 pg/ml in 11 patients compared with only 4 controls, and the mean serum lipoprotein(a) concentrations were 330 and 169 pg/ml respectively. The epileptic patients also had a thicker intima media of the common carotid artery. These results suggest that patients taking antiepileptic drugs may be at a higher risk of atherosclerosis.

Although it is possible to estimate apoC concentrations in lipoprotein fractions by delipidation, electrophoresis or isoelectric focusing, staining, and densitometry [e.g., (C5, N3)], or by high-pressure liquid chromatography (H6), most reported measurements of plasma apoC concentration have been by immunological means. These include radioimmunoassay (K8, K9, S17), electroimmunoassay (A4, A5, C27), radial immunodiffusion (P21), and enzyme immunoassay (H29).
