Mathematical modeling complexity

Coal combustion processes can be classified based on process type (see Table 9.1), even though classification based on the particle size, the flame type, the reactor flow type, or the mathematical model complexity is also possible [7]. [Pg.122]

The production of acetic acid from butane is a complex process. Nonetheless, sufficient information on product sequences and rates has been obtained to permit development of a mathematical model of the system. The relationships of the intermediates throw significant light on LPO mechanisms in general (22). Surprisingly, ca 25% of the carbon in the consumed butane is converted to ethanol in the first reaction step. Most of the ethanol is consumed by subsequent reaction. [Pg.343]

Statistical analysis can range from relatively simple regression analysis to complex input/output and mathematical models. The advent of the computer and its accessibiUty in most companies has broadened the tools a researcher has to manipulate data. However, the results are only as good as the inputs. Most veteran market researchers accept the statistical tools available to them but use the results to implement their judgment rather than uncritically accepting the machine output. [Pg.535]

Transport Models. Many mechanistic and mathematical models have been proposed to describe reverse osmosis membranes. Some of these descriptions rely on relatively simple concepts others are far more complex and require sophisticated solution techniques. Models that adequately describe the performance of RO membranes are important to the design of RO processes. Models that predict separation characteristics also minimize the number of experiments that must be performed to describe a particular system. Excellent reviews of membrane transport models and mechanisms are available (9,14,25-29). [Pg.146]

Distillation Columns. Distillation is by far the most common separation technique in the chemical process industries. Tray and packed columns are employed as strippers, absorbers, and their combinations in a wide range of diverse appHcations. Although the components to be separated and distillation equipment may be different, the mathematical model of the material and energy balances and of the vapor—Hquid equiUbria are similar and equally appHcable to all distillation operations. Computation of multicomponent systems are extremely complex. Computers, right from their eadiest avadabihties, have been used for making plate-to-plate calculations. [Pg.78]

No single method or algorithm of optimization exists that can be apphed efficiently to all problems. The method chosen for any particular case will depend primarily on (I) the character of the objective function, (2) the nature of the constraints, and (3) the number of independent and dependent variables. Table 8-6 summarizes the six general steps for the analysis and solution of optimization problems (Edgar and Himmelblau, Optimization of Chemical Processes, McGraw-HiU, New York, 1988). You do not have to follow the cited order exac tly, but vou should cover all of the steps eventually. Shortcuts in the procedure are allowable, and the easy steps can be performed first. Steps I, 2, and 3 deal with the mathematical definition of the problem ideutificatiou of variables and specification of the objective function and statement of the constraints. If the process to be optimized is very complex, it may be necessaiy to reformulate the problem so that it can be solved with reasonable effort. Later in this section, we discuss the development of mathematical models for the process and the objec tive function (the economic model). [Pg.742]

Cycles Design methods for cycles rely on mathematical modeling (or empiricism) and often extensive pilot plant experiments. Many cycles can be easily analyzed using the methods described above apphed to the collection of steps. In some cycles, however, especially those operated with short cycle times or in shallow beds, transitions may not be very fully developed, even at a periodic state, and the complexity may be compounded by multiple sorbates. [Pg.1499]

A wide variety of complex process cycles have been developed. Systems with many beds incorporating multiple sorbents, possibly in layered beds, are in use. Mathematical models constructed to analyze such cycles can be complex. With a large number of variables and nonlinear equilibria involved, it is usually not beneficial to make all... [Pg.1499]

Mathematical modelling of the machine is a complex subject and is not discussed here. For this, research and development works carried out by engineers and the textbooks available on the subject may be consulted. A few references are provided in the Further reading at the end of this chapter. In the above analysis we have considered the rotor flux as the reference frame. In fact any of the following may be fixed as the reference frame and accordingly the motor s mathematical model can be developed ... [Pg.108]

One of the major uses of molecular simulation is to provide useful theoretical interpretation of experimental data. Before the advent of simulation this had to be done by directly comparing experiment with analytical (mathematical) models. The analytical approach has the advantage of simplicity, in that the models are derived from first principles with only a few, if any, adjustable parameters. However, the chemical complexity of biological systems often precludes the direct application of meaningful analytical models or leads to the situation where more than one model can be invoked to explain the same experimental data. [Pg.237]

Figure 9-13). A response, of course, is a sudden rise in amplitude at a speed. The analysis is performed using a mathematical model that includes the effects of damping in the equations, making the model much more complex than any previous analysis. The University of Virginia carries out continuous research in which a consortium of users, vendors, and researchers provide funds, and data and interchange ideas to advance the science of rotor dynamics. Other organizations, such as the Bently Rotor Dynamics Research Corporation and Texas A M University, are also carrying on similar work on a continuing basis. Figure 9-13). MIE Theory a complex mathematical model that allows the computation of the amount of energy (light) scattered by spherical particles. [Pg.536]

The response of this model to creep, relaxation and recovery situations is the sum of the effects described for the previous two models and is illustrated in Fig. 2.39. It can be seen that although the exponential responses predicted in these models are not a true representation of the complex viscoelastic response of polymeric materials, the overall picture is, for many purposes, an acceptable approximation to the actual behaviour. As more and more elements are added to the model then the simulation becomes better but the mathematics become complex. [Pg.90]

Other important historical landmarks include the founding, in 1984, of the Santa Fe Institute, which is one of the leading interdisciplinary centers for complex systems theory research the first conference devoted solely to research in cellular automata (which is a prototypical mathematical model of complex systems), organized by Farmer, Toffoli and Wolfram at MIT in 1984 [farmer84] and the first artificial life conference, organized by Chri.s Langton at Los Alamos National Laboratory, in 1987 [lang89]. [Pg.4]

With the experimental observation of constitutive activity for GPCRs by Costa and Herz [2], a modification was needed. Subsequently, Samama and colleagues [3] presented the extended ternary complex model to fill the void. This chapter discusses relevant mathematical models and generally offers a linkage between empirical measures of activity and molecular mechanisms. [Pg.42]

There are different kinds of mathematical models, and they can be classified in two ways by their complexity and by the number of estimatable parameters they use. The most simple models are cartoons with few very parameters. [Pg.42]

Gas-liquid-particle operations are of a comparatively complicated physical nature Three phases are present, the flow patterns are extremely complex, and the number of elementary process steps may be quite large. Exact mathematical models of the fluid flow and the mass and heat transport in these operations probably cannot be developed at the present time. Descriptions of these systems will be based upon simplified concepts. [Pg.81]

The parameter a in Equation (11.6) is positive for electrophobic reactions (5r/5O>0, A>1) and negative for electrophilic ones (3r/0Oelectrochemical promotion behaviour is frequently encountered, leading to volcano-type or inverted volcano-type behaviour. However, even then equation (11.6) is satisfied over relatively wide (0.2-0.3 eV) AO regions, so we limit the present analysis to this type of promotional kinetics. It should be remembered thatEq. (11.6), originally found as an experimental observation, can be rationalized by rigorous mathematical models which account explicitly for the electrostatic dipole interactions between the adsorbates and the backspillover-formed effective double layer, as discussed in Chapter 6. [Pg.501]

The first level of complexity corresponds to simple, low uncertainty systems, where the issue to be solved has limited scope. Single perspective and simple models would be sufficient to warrant with satisfactory descriptions of the system. Regarding water scarcity, this level corresponds, for example, to the description of precipitation using a time-series analysis or a numerical mathematical model to analyze water consumption evolution. In these cases, the information arising from the analysis may be used for more wide-reaching purposes beyond the scope of the particular researcher. [Pg.132]

Since electrochemical processes involve coupled complex phenomena, their behavior is complex. Mathematical modeling of such processes improves our scientific understanding of them and provides a basis for design scale-up and optimization. The validity and utility of such large-scale models is expected to improve as physically correct descriptions of elementary processes are used. [Pg.174]
