Mats, reinforcement

A sheet of chopped strand mat-reinforced polyester is 5 mm thick and 10 mm wide. If its modulus is 8 GN/m calculate its flexural stiffness when subjected to a point load of 200 N midway along a simply supported span of 300 mm. Compare this with the stiffness of a composite beam made up of two 2.5 mm thick layers of this reinforced material separated by a 10 mm thick core of foamed plastic with a modulus of 40 MN/m. ... [Pg.244]

Thermoplastic composites, GMT. According to The European Alliance for SMC, the production of glass mat reinforced thermoplastics (GMT) and long fibre reinforced thermoplastics (LET) was up about 9% in 2002, demonstrating bright future prospects. Some examples are ... [Pg.100]

Choose the reinforcement according to the loads if the part properties must be 3D-isotropic, adopt a random reinforcement. If a 2D isotropy is sufficient, it is possible to use a balanced woven or mat reinforcement. [Pg.768]

Recendy, storm doors have been constmcted of advanced thermoplastic composites. Stampable, glass-mat reinforced polypropylene sheet is used to create a high strength outer skin. These compression molded skins are welded together using a friction or ultrasonic process then injection molded with a polyurethane foam core to produce an insulated structure. New technology for window frames incorporate the pultrusion of frame channels to produce a thermoset composite channel that can be filled with fiber glass for further insulation enhancement (12,31,33,34,48,49,54—56,60—67). [Pg.335]

In the use of preform and mat-reinforced molding, the plastic may be added either before or after the reinforcement is positioned in the cavity. The preform can be a spray-up of chopped glass fibers deposited... [Pg.448]

ASTM E 23-66 was applied for the dimensions of standard specimens except that the mat reinforced specimen (GC 33 wt % ) used ASTM D 256-56. Specimens were taken from a molded plate along the longitudinal fiber direction, and V notches were cut edgewise, perpendicular to both fiber direction and molding surface. Occasionally a specimen notched on the molding surface (flatwise) was used. Tests were performed with an instrumented Charpy impact tester (10) with a 30 kg-m or 150 kg-cm capacity. Test temperatures were varied from — 196°-250°C. [Pg.375]

The temperature dependence of the absorbed energy for standard specimens is shown in Figure 1. Impact behaviors and fracture modes of edge notched specimens depending on temperature were reported elsewhere (9, 10). In edge notched specimens of unidirectional roving reinforced material (GC 68 wt % ), cloth laminates, and mat reinforced material the fracture mode changed with temperature all materials re-... [Pg.375]

Morimoto and Suzuki (12) studied the flexural properties of continuous-glass-fiber-strand mat-reinforced rigid polyurethane foam, and found that both the flexural modulus and the flexural strength increased and the temperature dependence decreased when longer fibers were used as reinforcement. The density of the matrix foam also enhanced these tendencies. [Pg.173]

Glass-mat reinforced thermoplastic (GMT) is similar to SMC and is available in sheet form, reinforced with random oriented fibers that may be continuous or discontinuous. It is manufactured on a double belt press where the glass fiber mats are sandwiched between layers of extruded molten polymer before it enters the press. The thermoplastic is usually about a few millimeters thick and thus stiff, and hence stored as fiat sheets. Another method involves deposition of a molten mixture of resin, chopped fibers, and additives over a moving belt where the water is driven off. The fiber volume fraction in this compound is usually 0.1-0.3 and fiber lengths are in the range of 10-30 mm, unless the reinforcement is continuous. [Pg.287]

Glass, carbon, and aramid fibers are used as unidirectional or fabric mat reinforcements, with E-glass/ polyester being the most commonly used system. The limitation of pultrusion is that only constant cross-section parts can be fabricated. However, a variety of hollow and solid profiles of any length can be manufactured. [Pg.2315]

Waste incineration requires sophisticated scrubbers to contain corrosive volatiles which are in contact with the scrubber wall at elevated temperatures reaching 220°C. " Glass mat reinforced novolac epoxy vinyl ester resins have good performance in this application except that they are subjected to thermal stress due to the temperature difference between surface and wall, and they frequently crack. In order to improve performance, a two layer laminate was produced. The base layer is composed of resin reinforced with glass mat. The resin contains 15-20% graphite filler. The surface layer contains 100 g/m" of carbon fiber. The presence of these two fillers helps to distribute heat more evenly throughout the layer of laminate and prevents cracking even under extreme conditions. "... [Pg.736]
