The total sales value for battery systems worldwide in 1997 may amount to US 25.5 billion and the sales value for battery separators correspondingly to US 600 million Table 1 gives an estimate of the work battery market, split according to the different battery systems.

The USA is the predominant user of carbon-carbon components, with some 80% of the market split more or less equally between aircraft brakes, re-entry vehicles and rocket nozzles. 

After this stroll through history, let us consider the current markets, split according separation systems in the various geographic areas (Table 11.2). 

Although first marketed by Zeneca, a company split off from ICI in 1993, under the trade name of Biopol, marketing was transferred to Monsanto in May 1996. In 1993 production capacity was 600t.p.a. but prior to the Monsanto takeover had been expected to rise to 5000-10 000 t.p.a. by the late 1990s. However, in November 1998 Monsanto announced that it was discontinuing the Biopol programme. 

A breakdown of the current delivery costs for pipelines for an urban market of 250,000 people is shown in Figure 10.6. The forecourt/refueling site cost represents a large fraction of the total delivery cost (40%). This is predominantly the cost of compression and storage at the refueling site and highlights the importance of these areas for cost reduction. The reminder of the cost is split relatively evenly over the cost of the other parts of the pipeline infrastructure. This means that some cost reduction is needed in all of these areas. 

Cost considerations based on the low total system price for a household appliance did not allow for the customer-specific development of semiconductor components. The high development cost would either have to be split over a sufficiently large production volume or result in an unacceptably high unit price. Both are not given in the European market. 

Three different electrolytic approaches to salt splitting are competing with each other on the market [50], Fig. 30. 

French scientists at the Pasteur Institute, however, promptly dispelled some of Prontosil s mystery, splitting the molecule into a red dye component and an old chemical, sulfanilamide, its 1909 patent long since lapsed (2 ). The suspicion arose that Domagk, an I. G. Farbenindustrie researcher, had rediscovered sulfanilamide, and that the manufacturer had held it off the market until it could be presented in a new, complex, disguised, and patentable form (2, 3 ) Whether or not the suspicion was true, the French scientists, by showing that sulfanilamide was the therapeutically active fraction of Prontosil, shattered the gigantic Germany company s profitable plans. 

Applications for marketing should be sent to MHLW. The application then passes to PMDA, where the application splits into two different routes, namely (1) good laboratory practice (GLP), GCP and reliability compliance check by Office of Conformity Audit and (2) application review by Offices of New Drug or Office of Biologies. 

The world market for fluorescent pigments in 2000 was for 11 600 tonnes with the split into geographical and European application areas as shown in Table 3.6.
