Abstract. This section is an introduction into materials that can be used as Phase Change Materials (PCM) for heat and cold storage and their basic properties. At the beginning, the basic thermodynamics of the use of PCM and general physical and technical requirements on perspective materials are presented. Following that, the most important classes of materials that have been investigated and typical examples of materials to be used as PCM are discussed. These materials usually do not fulfill all requirements. Therefore, solution strategies and ways to improve certain material properties have been developed. The section closes with an up to date market review of commercial PCM, PCM composites and encapsulation methods. 

The "To-Market-to-Market" review is always one of my favorite chapters in the book as it details all of the new drugs introduced in the previous year (in this case 2009). Once again, Michelle Schmidt and Shridar Hedge have done an outstanding job compiling and writing this chapter. I cannot thank them enough. While faster approval times benefit the industry financially, a comparison of new drug approvals In the U.S. and the UK between 1971 and 1992 has shown that they are also associated with a greater number of withdrawals due to safety problems that are missed in the pre-marketing review (Abraham and Davis 2002). Supporting that position, a 2001 survey of FDA reviewers by the OIG found that 40 per cent who had been at the agency at least five years indicated that the review process had worsened during their tenure in terms of allowing for in-depth, science-based reviews (OIG 2003).
