Food Advisory Committee

Recent trends have seen more open acknowledgement of the need to balance scientific and social factors. For example, in the UK the Food Advisory Committee that advises the Food Standards Agency on food safety issues is comprised of a wide range of expertise including toxicologists, chemists, food technologists, economists, and representatives of consumer organisations and the food industry. The Committee is thus able to provide a balanced view that takes all interests into account. [Pg.76]

Because this hypothesis generated considerable anxiety and had broad pubhc health implications, the Nutrition Foundation (formerly affiliated with the International Life Sciences Institute but now defunct) convened a committee to evaluate the scientific evidence relative to the Feingold hypothesis, and if warranted, provide guidelines for further research. The committee, known as the National Advisory Committee on Hyperkinesis and Food Additives (1975), found no conclusive link between diet and behavior, but could not rule out a possible association since no studies appropriate for testing the hypothesis had been carried out. Based on the committee s recommendations, several doubleblind crossover studies were subsequently conducted, but these produced... [Pg.150]

Default values for UFs are provided in Table 3 in the UK document with the factors separated into four classes (1) animal-to-human factor, (2) human variability factor, (3) quality or quantity of data factor, and (4) severity of effect factor. The following chemical sectors are addressed food additives and contaminants, pesticides and biocides, air pollutants, drinking water contaminants, soil contaminants, consumer products and cosmetics, veterinary products, human medicines, medical devices, and industrial chemicals. [Pg.223]
