Margin selection

Synthesis. Because of the limited availabiUty of by-product isoprene much effort has been devoted to synthesis of isoprene. Most routes tend to have marginal selectivity and require large amounts of energy. The choice of which route is preferable depends on availabiUty and cost of raw materials and cost of energy. Several synthetic routes have been practiced commercially (103—108). 

The main advantage of piezoelectric devices is that, in principle, any process that results in a mass change at an interface can be measured. However, this very nonselective transduction process is also a major disadvantage in that it mandates the use of even more selective surface chemistries than are required for other types of chemical transducer systems. This will make the implementation of piezoelectric chemical sensing devices for ocean measurements rather difficult, but by no means impossible. Indeed, the coupling of pattern recognition techniques with an array of marginally selective piezoelectric transducers may, in the future, make these devices more useful for quantitative ocean measurements. 

This group of herbicides can be characterized as having relatively high water solubility marginal selectivity towards annual field crops relatively rapid action through both leaf uptake and root uptake and broad spectrum of activity after pre- and post-emergence treatments. 

The non-selective FID does not provide the second detector confirmation for BTEX, whereas the PID has only a marginal selectivity to aromatic compounds. In a typical analysis of gasoline in water by EPA Method 8021, benzene and MTBE results tend to be biased high due to coelution with other constituents false positive results are also common.

Analogous results were obtained for spiperone, which proved about 20-fold selective on the native subtypes and non-selective on the clones, in agreement with the resuhs from other laboratories [58, 22]. Also another dopamine receptor antagonist, ri eiidone, was reported to show some selectivity for the Ojg-AR [59], which was not confirmed in our studies. These problems of reproducibility might be ascribed to the marginal selectivity of the currently investigated conq)ounds. 

Ionized calcium and total calcium measurements are both performed with PVC-type electrodes. Membranes based on lipophilic alkyl phosphates with phosphonate plasticizers have only marginal selectivity over magnesium but have been used in the past to determine ionized calcium (i.e., free calcium) in undiluted blood samples (M8). Interference from protons at low pHs prevents such membranes from being employed for total calcium determinations on samples diluted with acid. Use of ionophore ETH 1001 (see Fig. 2) overcomes any concerns about selectivity, whether from magnesium or pH, and is now the neutral carrier system most often utilized within analyzers to detect ionized or total calcium. 

The etch rate ratio of the resist to the Si02 reference is referred to as the resist process selectivity, and coupled with resist thermal stability data is representative of the overall resist process compatibility. The lower the selectivity ratio (i.e., 1), the better the resist polymer dry-process compatibility. PMMA, for example, has a marginal selectivity of 0.9-1.2, or etches at the undesirably same rate as Si02. In addition, PMMA is also very susceptible to thermally-induced image flow due to low tg and TGA parameters, and also undergoes surface "frying" phenomena (see Figure 2). Therefore, PMMA has very poor overall dry-process compatibility. 

Product substitutabihty is closely related to brand loyalty. When brand loyalty is low, product substitution is likely and intensive distribution is required. Firms place a premium on point-of-purchase displays in high-traffic areas. To gain support firom wholesalers and/or retailers, the producer may offer higher-than-normal margins. Selective or exclusive distribution meikes product support easier.

The above proposal is based on the characteristic controlling parameters for a certain type of hazard with a significant safety margin. The concept of margin selection has mostly been discussed in the context of efficacy non-inferiorify frials, and this is perhaps the most important distinction between efficacy and safety trials. The earliest examples of non-inferiority trials typically used margins based on clinical considerations. The weakness of this approach becomes apparent when one considers the possibility that the margin chosen in this way could be greater than the effect of the active control.
