By structural complementarity, dicationic l,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (VII) provides an appropriate recognition site for phosphate ions and two stearyl side chains attached to the amines add lipophilic properties 59,60). Such a carrier model can selectively extract nucleotides from aqueous solution to chloroform solution via lipophilic salt formation. The order of nucleotide affinity is ATP > ADP > AMP. The selectivity ratios were 45 for ADP/AMP and 7500 for ATP/AMP at pH 3. The relative transport rate was ATP > ADP > AMP. The ratios were 60 for ATP/AMP and 51 for ADP/AMP. The modes of interaction of ADP and ATP are proposed to be as shown in Fig. 6. 

Ail extremely useful method for the asymmetric synthesis of substituted amino acids, in particular glutamic acids, is based on optically active bislactim ethers of cyclodipeptides. The lithium etiolates of bislactim ethers (which are prepared easily from amino acids) undergo 1,4-addition to various a,/ -unsaturated esters to give -substituted 2,5-dihydropyrazine-propanoates203-205 with high diastereofacial selectivity, ratio (R/S) > 140-200 1. 

The same 1 1 product ratio was found with iodobenzene-l-14C. This result clearly indicates that the same intermediate intervenes with both halides. The most likely candidate is benzyne, as shown, which would easily accommodate the distribution of the label. Also, the intermediate is not likely to contain Cl or I, because its selectivity ratio in the second step would then not be the same. 

Pyrethroids show very marked selective toxicity (Table 12.2). They are highly toxic to terrestrial and aquatic arthropods and to fish, but only moderately toxic to rodents, and less toxic still to birds. The selectivity ratio between bees and rodents is 10,000- to 100,000-fold with topical application of the insecticides. They therefore appear to be environmentally safe so far as terrestrial vertebrates are concerned. There are, inevitably, concerns about their possible side effects in aquatic systems, especially on invertebrates. 

The lipophilicity of the TRISPHAT anion 8 also confers to its salts an affinity for organic solvents and, once dissolved, the ion pairs do not partition in aqueous layers. This rather uncommon property was used by Lacour s group to develop a simple and practical resolution procedure of chiral cationic coordination complexes by asymmetric extraction [134,135]. Selectivity ratios as high as 35 1 were measured for the enantiomers of ruthenium(II) trisdiimine complexes, demonstrating without ambiguity the efficiency of the resolution procedure [134]. 

Selectivity parameters can be used to compare the catalytic performance of the different catalysts, and to find relationships between catalysts performance and physico-chemical features. Specifically, the following parameters were chosen (a) the O/C-methylation ratio, that is the ratio between the selectivity to 3-MA and that to 2,3-DMP+2,5-DMP+3,4-DMP (b) the ortho/para-C-alkylation ratio, that is the ratio between the selectivity to 2,3-DMP+2,5-DMP and the selectivity to 3,4-DMP (c) the 2,5-DMP/2,3-DMP selectivity ratio. Table 2 compares these parameters for MgO, Mg/Al/O and Mg/Fe/O catalysts. Data were reported at 30% m-cresol conversion, thus under conditions of negligible consecutive reactions. Both these parameters reflect a moderate stability for BrN3 in methanol. This feature made it impossible to apply the azide clock method to determine the lifetime of the ionic intermediates arising from deactivated alkenes (for example, / ,p -bis(trifluoromethyl)stilbenes). Nevertheless, for a couple of p-methoxy substituted stilbenes and unsubstituted stilbenes the selectivity ratios reported in Table II have been found. (IT)...
