Management Aspects

This chapter addresses project management aspects of a revamp. It also provides design guidelines that can be used by a refiner in selecting the revamp components. The original driving force for a project is often a particular mechanical problem or a process bottleneck. The ultimate objective of a revamp should be a safe, reliable, and profitable operation.

Besides its use in treating illegal opiate addiction, methadone is occasionally used in other areas of medicine. All of the opiates, including methadone, are powerful pain control medications. Since pain is one of the most frequent, and least well-managed, aspects of cancer care, physicians often use multiple medications to try to control cancer pain. Methadone can be given in 20 mg tablets or by intramuscular injection every four to six hours to control moderate to severe cancer pain. Methadone is often used when there is a desire to let the patient sleep because of its high sedating properties.

The reader who expects to find in this chapter a guide to the validation of every type of process, system, or product imaginable will be disappointed. The proper execution of validation belies condensation into such a brief effort. What I have endeavored to do instead is to discuss issues rather than science in an effort to address more the philosophy, compliance, and management aspects of the subject. I have provided a list of references on validation practice throughout which answers to a great number of technical questions can be found.

It is not enough to be aware of how to predict the effect of process hazards and how to design systems to reduce the risks of these hazards. It also is important to consider how chemical process safety can be managed. Technical people at all levels have a degree of management responsibility, and can contribute to the overall management of safe plants. 

A systematic review of randomized control trials of inpatient multidiscipUnary stroke rehabilitation has shown the benefits of rehabilitation, beyond seven days after stroke, as distinct from the acute medical management aspects of acute stroke care in the first week after stroke (Langhorne and Duncan 2001), with a reduction in death (OR 0.66 95% odds ratio [OR], coirfidence interval [Cl], 0.49-0.88) and death or dependency (OR, 0.65 95% Cl, 0.50-0.85). For every 20 patients with stroke treated in a post-acute (beyond seven days) multidiscipUnary rehabihtation unit, one additional person returns home independent in activities of daily Uving. 

For the agronomic management aspect of the trial the plots would be cut immediately before the fertiliser treatments are applied and then another 12 times at two-weekly intervals. The agronomists would dry and weigh the whole cut from each plot and then hand the material over for the analytical studies.

The solution presented here is based on CORBA [877], a wide-spread and mature middleware platform. CORBA provides direct support for a multitude of service management aspects in distributed systems [262]. Furthermore, there are many stable implementations. Thus, a first step was the selection of an appropriate CORBA implementation, based on an evaluation of the runtime characteristics (see Subsect. 4.2.3). Many tools are in the hands of the analyst and management to adapt the laboratory to his task. Figure 1.3 shows that they are of various types. They have to be included in the entire management of the laboratory, e.g. training of staff and motivation must be planned and built in the lifestyle and the lifetime of the laboratory. Quality always pays or as W. Edwards Deming preached cheaper is not always better, better is always cheaper . It may appear to be expensive and time consuming, but it is the only way to cope with unexpected situations, e.g. absence of staff, sudden unexpected workload etc. It is out of the scope of this book to discuss all infrastructure and management aspects necessary to set up a quality system within a laboratory.
