As with any power equipment, gas turbines require a program of planned inspections with repair or replacement of damaged components. A properly designed and conducted inspection and preventive maintenance program can do much to increase the availability of gas turbines and reduce unscheduled maintenance. Inspections and preventive maintenance can be expensive, but not as costly as forced shutdowns. Nearly all manufacturers emphasize and describe preventive maintenance procedures to ensure the reliability of their machinery, and any maintenance program should be based on manufacturer s recommendations. Inspection and preventive maintenance procedures can be tailored to individual equipment application with references such as the manufacturer s instruction book, the operator s manual, and the preventive maintenance checklist. 

General problems and the appropriate maintenance procedures are summarized in Table 2.2. The details of individual instruments are well described in the manufacturers manuals. The common problems are due to poor maintenance of the instruments and poor understanding of the specificity of stationary phase... 

Instrumentation/calibration. Instructions for calibration and maintenance of automated equipment only for those activities that are performed each time the procedure is done. Instrument operators manuals may be used to describe what the operator needs to do and how to do it.

Good manuals use imperative writing style that teUs users what to do. Manuals that simply describe the features of a machine are not as helpful and effective. Those who buy machines should keep the manuals so the information is available for reference and training. Some major distributors and sellers of machines and tools also offer safety information and guides. 

The publications system was based on two types of documents—the field manual and the technical manual. The field manual group included a general series, covering the fundamental employment of combined arms and services, and a particular series, containing instructions on the employment of specific units of the several arms and services. The technical manual group, on the other hand, described materiel, its maintenance and operation, and contained other data mote specialized in nature than was considered appropriate for inclusion in field manuals. These two groups furnished basic doctrine for the employment of CWS procedures and materials.
