A type of waterside maintenance chemical treatment. Typically for smaller boiler plants, individual inhibitors are blended together to produce various multifunctional formulations specific for particular water chemistry and/or operating conditions. Larger boiler plants tend to use individual active component inhibitors.

Generally, the EPA is encouraging the smaller water systems to use mechanical methods to control lead in the water, such as replacing the pipes that carry the water, or simpler methods, such as limestone softening.
