Environmental factors have been identified as contributing to the development of NHL. Certain occupations such as wood and forestry workers, butchers, exterminators, grain millers, machinists, mechanics, painters, printers, and industrial workers have a higher prevalence of disease. Industrial chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, organic chemicals (e.g., benzene), solvents, and wood preservatives are also associated with NHL. 

The National Occupational Exposure Survey, conducted by NIOSH between 1980 and 1983, estimated that 96,345 employees (including 590 females) were exposed to fuel oil no. 2, 1,526 employees were exposed to fuel oil no. 4 and 1,076,518 employees were exposed to kerosene in the workplace (NOES 1992). Most exposure to fuel oil no. 2 was in the electric, gas, and sanitary services industries exposure to fuel oil no. 4 was greatest in the primary metal industries, and exposure to kerosene was greatest for machinists. 

Labor required to install the system was estimated to include machinists, welders, plumbers, and electricians, in addition to other site labor, supervision, and project management. The system required water, gas, and electricity (D17162K, p. 12). 

Since it has been shown that NDEIA can cause cancer in two species of laboratory animals 22, 45), we believe that its presence at relatively high levels in cutting fluids, may represent a hazardous situation in terms of worker exposure. It is, therefore, suggested that workers who formulate or use cutting fluids (such as machinists) be studied with regard to their cancer incidence, and measures should be taken to reduce their daily exposure to NDEIA. 

In the Montreal case-control study carried out by Siemiatycki (1991 see the monograph on dichloromethane in this volume), the investigators estimated the associations between 293 workplace substances and several types of cancer. Isopropanol was one of the substances. About 4% of the study subjects had ever been exposed to isopropanol. Among the main occupations to which isopropanol exposure was attributed in this study were fire fighters, machinists and electricians. For most types of cancer examined (oesophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, pancreas, prostate, bladder, kidney, skin melanoma, lymphoma), there was no indication of an excess risk due to isopropanol. For lung cancer, based on 16 cases exposed at the substantial level, the odds ratio was 1.4 (90% confidence interv al, 0.8-2.7). [The interpretation of the null results has to take into account the small numbers and presumed low levels of exposure.]... 

Machinists have learned through experience, and are certainly well aware, that machining plastics is profitable. While machining plastics is not particularly burdensome, there are specific considerations that must be followed when machining plastics. Because plastics have a much lower deflection temperature than metals if too great a heat build up is allowed, the plastic may tend to gum tooling. Plastics are more resilient than metals when close tolerance is required. The operator must compensate for the resilience effect of plastic. 

The compressor is disassembled. I get the opportunity to accompany the rotor to Dallas, in the back of a van that needed a new suspension. Once there, I watched the manufacturer s machinist crew clean and rebalance the wheels. I noticed that the salt deposits were thickest on the middle wheel. The last wheel was only slightly encrusted while the first wheel was clean, except for some waxy grease.

On the afternoon of the second day, a crew of two machinists and a welder were assigned to disconnect the pump from the discharge piping. A hot work permit was issued, after explosion meter tests were conducted at a nearby coupling to ensure that the piping did not contain any flammables. 

Another old Supreme Court case (27) referred to the right of an inventor to use an extended technical arm. The court noted that to make an improved invention an inventor needs a considerable fund of knowledge, and where this fund is acquired before the invention is made those who imparted the fund to the inventor do not become joint inventors. During his experiments, the court said that an inventor seeks and secures a point from one scientist, another point from a machinist, another from a book, and so on. He is not any less an inventor for doing the first two things than he is for doing the last.
