Lucas method

Polar and quantum effects (in H2, D2, and He) can be taken into account by multiplying equation (2-51) by factors given by Lucas (1980). The data needed to apply the Lucas method are tabulated next (Reid et al., 1987). [Pg.114]

The beaker is chilled in an ice bath for 1 hour. The crystalline diacetate that separates is collected on a Buchner funnel and washed with three 20-ml. portions of cold water. After drying for 30 minutes on the funnel with suction, the diacetate is dried overnight in a vacuum desiccator containing calcium chloride (Note 4). The dried diacetate weighs 26.7-29.3 g. (83-91%) and melts at 158-159° with decomposition. The purity of the diacetate, determined by the titration method of Lucas, Kennedy, and Formo,3 is 97-98%, which is good enough for most purposes. The purity can be increased to 99-100% by a recrystallization from 5M acetic acid. [Pg.62]

Dillon, Young, and Lucas (5) described a method for determining dibromobutanes in 99% methanol. Dillon ( ) expanded this work to include a procedure for determining ethylene dibromide. Brenner and Poland (1) described a procedure in which they determined 1.000 mg. of ethylene dibromide with a recovery of 65.8%. Equations 1 and 2 show the main reactions that occur. [Pg.202]

As mentioned earlier (see p. 122) the previously postulated dioxetane intermediate in firefly bioluminescence has been challenged as no 180 is in-corporated in the carbon dioxide released during oxidation of firefly luciferin with 18C>2. In view of the crucial significance of the 180. experiments De Luca and Dempsey 202> rigorously examined the reliability of their tracer method. They conclude from their experiments that all available evidence is in favour of a linear, not a cyclic peroxide intermediate — in contrast to Cypridina bioluminescence where at least part of the reaction proceeds via a cyclic peroxide (dioxetane) as concluded from the incorporation of 180 into the carbon dioxide evolved 202,203). However, the dioxetane intermediate is not absolutely excluded as there is the possibility of a non-chemiluminescent hydrolytic cleavage of the four-membered ring 204>. [Pg.133]

If the product is an antibody, then it is essential to distinguish the immunoglobulin product, e.g., mouse IgG, from any media immunoglobulin components, e.g., bovine IgG. Lucas et al.16 developed an immunoassay to measure nanogram quantities of bovine IgG in the presence of a large excess of a structurally homologous protein, mouse MAb. The bovine IgG was a contaminant that copurified with the product from a protein A column. For the bovine IgG assay, whole IgG and protein A-purified IgG reacted differently in the assay. It is important to evaluate these types of assays for cross-reactivity. For other media components, such as chemicals or antibiotics, ELISA is probably not the most appropriate method due to the low immunogenicity of chemicals. Techniques such as HPLC would be better to detect these chemical components. [Pg.291]

In 2001, De Luca and GiacomeUi " reported a new simple and high-yielding one-flask synthesis of Weinreb amides from carboxylic acids and A-protected amino acids that uses different 1,3,5-triazine derivatives (such as 236) as the coupling agents (Scheme 104). The method allows the preparation of Weinreb amides 237 and hydroxamates as O-benzyl and 0-silyl hydroxamates that can be easily transformed into hydroxamic acids. [Pg.220]

Although pure silica and pure sodium carbonate would yield only soluble water glass, K. C. Bailey and A. Lucas believe that if the materials used by the Phoenicians contained lime as an impurity, true glass could possibly have been produced by the method described by Pliny (44). Many writers, however, regard Pliny s account as highly improbable. [Pg.466]

An HRTEM study of Zn-Cr Fe oxides using surface-profiling methods in the EM has been reported by Briscoe et al (1984, 1985). Chemical kinetic studies of the oxidation of benzene to maleic anhydride over V-Mo-O catalysts (prepared using 3 V205 Mo03), have been described using GC-MS techniques (Lucas et al 1983). However, microstructural information is limited and there are opportunities for EM studies of these catalyst systems. [Pg.131]

Cp-substituted reactants. It is not clear why such long chain lengths are required to alleviate steric interactions in the Humphrey-Lucas molecules, but similar steric effects may be acting in the polymerizations of complex 3, where two molecules of 3 and a catalyst molecule all need to interact to carry out the polymerization. Nevertheless, despite this one setback, ADMET remains an attractive method for synthesizing new polymers with metal-metal bonds along their backbones. [Pg.266]
