Lubricants fluoropolymers

In addition to the fluoroplastics and fluororubbers already described other fluoropolymers have been marketed. Polymers of hexafluoropropylene oxide are marketed by Du Pont (Krytox). These materials have a low molecular weight (2000-7000) and are either oils or greases. The oils are uses as lubricants, heat transfer fluids and non-flammable oils for diffusion pumps. The greases are also used as lubricants. They have good heat and oil resistance but it is said that explosions may result from contact with the surfaces aluminium or magnesium cuttings. [Pg.384]

Peduoropolyethers, which constitute special class of fluoropolymer, are useful as lubricants,1 elastomers,2 and heat-transfer fluids under demanding conditions. Although we made no attempt to elucidate the mechanism of friction decreases in rubbers after surface fluorination, it seems to us that apart from the substitution of H atoms to F in the polymer macromolecule, which forms a fluoropolymer on the surface, there is another phenomenon that makes a significant contribution to the friction decreases, i.e., fluorination of carbon black, which is used in rubber recipes for reinforcement. It appears that when the carbon black in the surface of the rubber is fluorinated it produces a lubricating effect, followed by blooming on the surface of the treated rubber while it is under a friction load. So, in our opinion, two effects contribute to friction decrease of carbon-filled rubbers fluorination of the rubber macromolecules and fluorination of the carbon black rubbers that do not contain carbon black show a much smaller decrease in friction after XeF2 treatment. [Pg.235]

Fluorocarbons and fluoropolymers have been in commercial use for over half a century and have found their way into a diverse array of products. The members of this array are too numerous to hst but they include nonstick coatings for cookware, construction materials, carpets, textiles, paints, electronic materials, household cleaners and personal hygiene products. As fluorocarbons are expensive compared to their hydrocarbon analogues, they are chosen carefully and usually to fill a void in a product attribute that simply cannot be accommodated by another material. Fluorine contamination has been reported in various environments and applications in the past. It has shown up in plasma processing [10-18], as crosscontamination from storage in contaminated containers or with contaminated samples [14,18], and modification of aluminum deposited on fluoropolymer substrates and other polymers having fluorine-based plasma treatments has also been observed [19-21]. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE Teflon) was discovered accidently by PlunkettCZ nd commercialized by DuPont in the 1940 s. This polymer has a solubility parameter of about 6H and a high melting point of 327°C and is not readily moldable. Poly-chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE, Kel-F), the copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene (FEP), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF, Kynar), the copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and ethylene (ETFE), the copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoroisobutylene (CM-1), perfluoroalkoxyethylene (PFA) and polyvinyl fluoride (PVF, Tedlar) are all more readily processed than PTFE. However, the lubricity and chemical resistance of these fluoropolymers is less than that of PTFE. [Pg.92]

Another dynamic seal type used is the poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) seal utilized on applications with PV values that are not as stringent as those of clutch systems.
