Logistics system

At present, the trend is moving from the analysis of individual production and logistics systems towards the optimization of entire production networks, that is, the optimization of the distribution to different production locations taking account of the procurement and distribution chain as indicated by the remarks on supply chain simulation earlier in this chapter. However, in particular for these applications there are some challenges in the basic work of providing consistent and coherent data describing the processes at different sites which most likely are located in different countries. 

The implementation of efficient and updated 2D and 3D structure databases is one major challenge in molecular diversity management. Another alternative is to prevent modifications to the records at the data collection and acquisition domains. The physical inventory of the plates on an HTS robotics system must be synchronized with the plate logistics system to ensure that all physical transactions are tracked and any transformation requests can be directed to the instrumentation via the plate logistics software. Any analytical instrumentation should also be integrated here, because analytical data relates to specific samples in specific plates. The HTS plate reader output files are loaded into the assay data system via software that integrates the HTS reader instrumentation with the operational assay data management system. 

None of these precautions, however, can compensate for the casual approach that some consumers will inevitably take to their own safety. Engineering aimed at reducing the possibilities for mishandling can help lower the number of accidents but can never preclude them all. Some hydrogen logistic systems will prove superior in allowing a more benign consumer interface, and the issue for the DOE will be to identify and promote these systems.

Readiness of the logistics system to meet mission requirements under a chemical or biological attack should also be made a priority.
