Dermatology Topical steroids are useful in keloids, hypertrophic scars, other localised hypertrophic, infiltrated, inflammatory lesions of lichen planus, psoriatic plaques, granuloma annulare and lichen simplex chronicus discoid lupus erythematosus, necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum and alopecia areata. [Pg.284]

Tar preparations are used mainly in the treatment of psoriasis, dermatitis, and lichen simplex chronicus. The phenolic constituents endow these compounds with antipruritic properties, making them particularly valuable in the treatment of chronic lichenified dermatitis. Acute dermatitis with vesiculation and oozing may be irritated by even weak tar preparations, which should be avoided. However, in the subacute and chronic stages of dermatitis and psoriasis, these preparations are quite useful and offer an alternative to the use of topical corticosteroids. [Pg.1302]

Topical doxepin hydrochloride 5% cream (Zonalon) may provide significant antipruritic activity when utilized in the treatment of pruritus associated with atopic dermatitis or lichen simplex chronicus. The precise mechanism of action is unknown but may relate to the potent Hi and H2-receptor antagonist properties of dibenzoxepin tricyclic compounds. Percutaneous absorption is variable and may result in significant drowsiness in some patients. In view of the anticholinergic effect of doxepin, topical use is contraindicated in patients with untreated narrow-angle glaucoma or a tendency to urinary retention. [Pg.1465]

Pruritic and inflamed periocular skin is a common eyelid manifestation of periorbital dermatoses. The poor ability of involved skin to bind water in atopic disease decreases the resistance to irritants and allergens and promotes inflammation. Red itchy eyes are accompanied by erythema, edema, and fine scaling of the eyelids. Papules and fine fissures are sometimes noted, and if the condition is chronic, normal skin lines become thickened and accentuated. Chronic rubbing leads to exacerbation of the symptoms, and brown discoloration of the upper eyelids can be observed. Referred to as lichen simplex chronicus, the changes appear to be more common in women and Asian individuals and result from a repeated rubbing cycle. [Pg.568]

Adrenal steroids of highest potency are reserved for recalcitrant dermatoses, e.g. lichen simplex, lichen planus, nodular prurigo and discoid lupus erythematosus. [Pg.303]

Lichen simplex (neuroderm ticis) Antipruritics topical corticosteroid explain scratch-itch cycle to patient. Covering the lesion so as to prevent scratching.e.g. with a medicated bandage, sometimes breaks the vicious cycle. [Pg.311]

Reactions to magnolia are rare, but a nursery worker had a severe sensitivity associated with severe lichen simplex chronicus of the face. He was cured by wearing disposable vinyl gloves, which allowed him to avoid contact with the plant and continue working [86]. [Pg.754]

All compounds that we have studied for effects on keratinization have been initially evaluated on a series of over twenty patients with ichthyosis of several types. Many of the compounds have been evaluated for therapeutic effects on larger series of patients with dry skin several have been used therapeutically for comedonous acne and a few have been used in therapy of a diverse group of disorders including palmar and plantar hyperkeratosis, Darier s disease, lichen simplex chronicus and others. Reduction in stratum corneum accumulation has been readily demonstrable in all disorders in response to two-four times daily topical application of the compounds formulated as 5-20% oil-in-water creams, as solutions and as gels. [Pg.8]

Several lines of evidence point to a connection between lipid metabolism and scaly skin. Inhibitors of cholesterol biosynthesis such as triparanol and nicotinic acid can produce scaly lesions superficially resembling ichthyosis. A disturbance of cutaneous sterol ester biosynthesis accompanies the hyperkeratosis of essential fatty acid deficiency, and increased ratios of free sterol to sterol esters have been reported in psoriasis and atopic eczema . We have recently shown that epidermal lipid biosynthesis is increased in lesions of psoriasis and lichen simplex, with the free sterol fraction affected more than other lipid classes. [Pg.19]
