The Ebro catchment has the highest richness of autochthonous limnetic species in the Iberian Peninsula [51]. Salaria (blennius) fluviatilis, is common at the main channel and tributaries, and Chondrostoma toxostoma only occurs at the tributaries. Leuciscus cephalus is a fish of narrow distribution, found only at the Ebro river basin and other small catchments of NE Spain. Salmonids are common at the headwaters one species is native Salmo trutta and two introduced others, Salmo gairdneri and Salvelinus fontinalis. Part of the autocthonous species are endemic, for example the cyprinids Barbus graellsii and Barbus haasi, the cobitid C. calderoni with scattered and scarce populations [52] and A. iberus. [Pg.133]

German water authorities adopted a permit system for effluent emission where the requirements are based on fish toxicity [195]. Daphnia, algae, and luminescent bacteria are including for a screening additionally to the fish test. In this scheme the fish test Goldoifo Leuciscus idus) is stiU considered to be the only test producing definitive results. [Pg.45]

The alarm substance (Schreckstoff) has served to test Hamilton s selfish-herd theory. Fourteen dace, Leuciscus leuciscus, were habituated to minnow schreckstoff, until they no longer responded. They were then joined by a single, naive minnow. Upon adding schreckstoff to the water, the single minnow was alarmed while the school was not. The single minnow moved into the school and became surrounded by other fish on all sides (Krause, 1993). Among alarmed fish, it is everybody for himself. ... [Pg.194]

In a semistatic acute fish toxicity test (Leuciscus idus, melanotus, fresh water fish) a saturated solution with different blue pigment compounds (with unsolved material on the bottom or filtrated solution) no death occurred within 96 hours. Based on the quantity weighed the No Observed Effect Level (NOEL) is greater than 1000 mg/1 (nominal concentrations) [3.222],... [Pg.141]
