Lessen

To lessen the risk of pumping sludges or slurries into a unit, the practice is to leave a safety margin of 50 cm (heel) below the outlet nozzle or install a strainer on the pump suction line. The deposits accumulate with time and the tanks are periodically emptied and cleaned. 

A membrane filter which can uniformly remove all viral agents regardless of the size of the viral agent is not available. Part of the difficulty is that the efficient recovery of the biological product diminishes as the size difference between the vims and biological product lessens. Thus a balance needs to be met where vims removal and product recovery are optimized. 

About half of the wodd production comes from methanol carbonylation and about one-third from acetaldehyde oxidation. Another tenth of the wodd capacity can be attributed to butane—naphtha Hquid-phase oxidation. Appreciable quantities of acetic acid are recovered from reactions involving peracetic acid. Precise statistics on acetic acid production are compHcated by recycling of acid from cellulose acetate and poly(vinyl alcohol) production. Acetic acid that is by-product from peracetic acid [79-21-0] is normally designated as virgin acid, yet acid from hydrolysis of cellulose acetate or poly(vinyl acetate) is designated recycle acid. Indeterrninate quantities of acetic acid are coproduced with acetic anhydride from coal-based carbon monoxide and unknown amounts are bartered or exchanged between corporations as a device to lessen transport costs. 

Acetyl chlotide is reduced by vatious organometaUic compounds, eg, LiAlH (18). / fZ-Butyl alcohol lessens the activity of LiAlH to form lithium tti-/-butoxyalumium hydtide [17476-04-9] C22H2gA102Li, which can convert acetyl chlotide to acetaldehyde [75-07-0] (19). Triphenyl tin hydtide also reduces acetyl chlotide (20). Acetyl chlotide in the presence of Pt(II) or Rh(I) complexes, can cleave tetrahydrofuran [109-99-9] C HgO, to form chlorobutyl acetate [13398-04-4] in about 72% yield (21). Although catalytic hydrogenation of acetyl chlotide in the Rosenmund reaction is not very satisfactory, it is catalyticaHy possible to reduce acetic anhydride to ethylidene diacetate [542-10-9] in the presence of acetyl chlotide over palladium complexes (22). Rhodium trichloride, methyl iodide, and ttiphenylphosphine combine into a complex that is active in reducing acetyl chlotide (23). 

Dissolved matter lowers oxygen solubihty. At 20°C and 101.3 kPa (1 atm), the equihbrium concentration of dissolved oxygen in seawater is 7.42 mg/L. It is 9.09 mg/L in chloride-free water and 9.17 mg/L in clean water. This lessening of oxygen solubihty is of importance to wastewater treatment. The solubihty of atmospheric oxygen in a domestic sewage is much less than in distilled water (12). 

Compressed Ga.s PropeIIa.nts. The compressed gas propellants, so named because they are gaseous in conventional aerosol containers, are nontoxic, nonflammable, low in cost, and very inert. When used in aerosols, however, the pressure in the container drops as the contents are depleted. Although the problem is lessened when the contents are materials in which the propellant is somewhat soluble, this pressure drop may cause changes in the rate and characteristics of the aerosol spray. A compressed gas aerosol system is illustrated in Figure 3. 

Cascara sagrada is used as a cathartic. It is most useful when prepared as a fluid extract, and tends to be a mild laxative causing Htfle discomfort. However, on prolonged use it may result in characteristic melanotic pigmentation of the rectal mucosa. The bitter taste can be lessened, owing to neutralization of the acid constituents, if the ground substance is moistened and mixed with magnesium or calcium hydroxide. This treatment may lessen the potency of the preparation. 

Geotextiles may be woven, nonwoven, or knitted. AH types, woven, nonwoven, or knitted, are susceptible to degradation owing to the effects of ultraviolet light and water. Thus stabilizing agents are added to the base polymeric material to lessen the effects of exposure to ultraviolet light and water. 

At times, the process stream flow must be increased after the initial installation to satisfy production demands. Depending on the magnitude of the increase, the existing system may or may not be able to handle the added flow. If it can, regeneration frequency must increase. Adding more resin to the column is often considered an alternative to installing another column. Resin addition lessens the space for backwash and may be a cause for poor column performance. 

Protocol problems may exist for market researchers in a company. Often company poHcy dictates that any call on a customer requires the agreement of the sales department and the presence of a sales representative at the actual meeting. Similarly, if calls are to be made on suppHers, purchasing department approval and attendance are often necessary. These rules can delay or lessen opportunities for a useful dialogue but their existence must be recognized and coped with in the field. 

Molybdate orange and red are pigments (qv) that contain lead(II) molybdate [10190-33-3], PbMoO, formulated in mixed phases with PbCrO and PbSO. The mixed phase is more intensely colored than any of the component phases. Concerns about lead content are lessening the use of these materials (see also Paint). Various organic dyes are precipitated with heteropolymolybdates. This process allows the fixation of the dye in various fabrics. The molybdenum anion generally imparts light stabiHty to the colorant as weU (91). 

In 1974, Monsanto brought on-stream an improved Hquid-phase AIQ. alkylation process that significantly reduced the AIQ. catalyst used by operating the reactor at a higher temperature (42—44). In this process, the separate heavy catalyst—complex phase previously mentioned was eliminated. Eliminating the catalyst—complex phase increases selectivities and overall yields in addition to lessening the problem of waste catalyst disposal. The ethylben2ene yields exceed 98%. 

Release agents function by either lessening intermolecular interactions between the two surfaces in contact or preventing such close contact. Thus, they can be low surface-tension materials based on aUphatic hydrocarbon, fluorocarbon groups, or particulate soHds. The principal categories of material used are waxes, fatty acid metal soaps, other long-chain alkyl derivatives, polymers, and fluorinated compounds. 

In 1956 selenium was identified (123) as an essential micronutrient iu nutrition. In conjunction with vitamin E, selenium is effective iu the prevention of muscular dystrophy iu animals. Sodium selenite is adrninistered to prevent exudative diathesis iu chicks, a condition iu which fluid leaks out of the tissues white muscle disease iu sheep and infertility iu ewes (see Eeed ADDITIVES). Selenium lessens the iacidence of pneumonia iu lambs and of premature, weak, and stillborn calves controls hepatosis dietetica iu pigs and decreases muscular inflammation iu horses. White muscle disease, widespread iu sheep and cattle of the selenium-deficient areas of New Zealand and the United States, is insignificant iu high selenium soil areas. The supplementation of animal feeds with selenium was approved by the U.S. EDA iu 1974 (see Eeed additives). Much of selenium s metaboHc activity results from its involvement iu the selenoproteia enzyme, glutathione peroxidase. 

New silver accounts for only a portion of the silver used ia the United States. Recycled silver makes up the difference. AvailabiUty of recycled silver depends on market price. As the market price iacreases, so does the flow of recycled silver (see Recycling, nonferrous metals). The New York price reached an all-time high of 1543/kg ( 48.00/troy oz) onjanuary 21, 1980, primarily as a result of speculation. The price fell to 347.30/kg ( 10.80/troy oz) four months later as the pressure of speculative activity ia the silver market lessened. Comprehensive reviews of the silver market are published yearly the New York prices between 1985 and 1988 were as follows (23).
