Acrylonitrile—methyl acrylate—iadene terpolymers, by themselves, or ia blends with acrylonitrile—methyl acrylate copolymers, exhibit even lower oxygen and water permeation rates than the iadene-free copolymers (110,111). Terpolymers of acrylonitrile with iadene and isobutjlenealso exhibit excellent barrier properties (112), and permeation of gas and water vapor through acrylonitrile—styrene—isobutjleneterpolymers is also low (113,114). [Pg.196]

Dissolved matter lowers oxygen solubihty. At 20°C and 101.3 kPa (1 atm), the equihbrium concentration of dissolved oxygen in seawater is 7.42 mg/L. It is 9.09 mg/L in chloride-free water and 9.17 mg/L in clean water. This lessening of oxygen solubihty is of importance to wastewater treatment. The solubihty of atmospheric oxygen in a domestic sewage is much less than in distilled water (12). [Pg.339]

Welding (qv) of titanium requires a protected atmosphere of iaert gas. Furthermore, parts and filler wire are cleaned with acetone (trichloroethylene is not recommended). Reactivity. Hemoglobin can exist ia either of two stmctural coaformatioas, corresponding to the oxy (R, relaxed) or deoxy (T, tense) states. The key differences between these two stmctures are that the constrained T state has a much lower oxygen affinity than the R state and the T state has a lower tendency to dissociate into subunits that can be filtered in the kidneys. The second class of anodic inhibitors contains ions which need oxygen to passivate a metal. Tungstate and molybdate, for example, requke the presence of oxygen to passivate a steel. The concentration of the anodic inhibitor is critical for corrosion protection. Insufficient concentrations can lead to pitting corrosion or an increase in the corrosion rate. The use of anodic inhibitors is more difficult at higher salt concentrations, higher temperatures, lower pH values, and in some cases, at lower oxygen concentrations (37). [Pg.282]

Effects of Low Oxygen Levels There are many factors which can affect the abihty of human beings to adjust to lower oxygen levels. For example, two men were accidentally exposed to a low oxygen level in a vessel. One of them died, and one survived without permanent injuiy.
