Latins, treatment

Thermal treatment is used to destroy, break down, or aid in the desorption of contaminants in gases, vapors, Hquids, sludges, and soHds. There are a variety of thermal processes that destroy contaminants, most of which are classified as incineration. Incineration HteraHy means to become ash (from Medieval Latin, incinerare in or into ashes). With respect to the incineration of hazardous wastes regulated in the United States, however, there is a strict legal definition of what constitutes an incinerator. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) definition of incinerator at 40 CFR 260.10 is... [Pg.168]

More recently, standard tuberculosis has become a common infection in AIDS patients. TB was largely eradicated in Western countries through public health measures and antibiotic treatments. However, recently there has been a resurgence of TB, due to a combination of several factors (1) immigration from areas where TB infection is still common (Asia and Latin America) (2) decline in public health funding and (3) AIDS patients, who are highly susceptible to TB infection and who in turn can transmit the bacterium. [Pg.210]

Historically, PSP has occurred in North America (the Pacific Northwest and the Northeast) and Europe (Acres and Gray, 1978 Anderson, 1989). More recently, PSP has been reported in Japan, Malaysia, the Philipines, Indonesia, Latin America, and China (Anderson et al., 1996 Kao, 1993). The fatality rate for PSP varies on the basis of local health-care practitioner awareness of the disease and its treatment and on the capacity of the existing medical system to assist one or more poisoning victims needing respiratory support. For example, in recent outbreaks in Europe and North America, no deaths occurred among more than 200 cases. However, in similar outbreaks in southeast Asia and Latin America, where the disease is unfamiliar to local health practitioners and where health-care resources are limited, fatality rates of 2 to 14% have been reported (Kao, 1993). [Pg.166]

Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) is the main cause of TD in Latin America, whereas in Asia it is reported in only 15% of cases. Enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) strains are recorded with even less frequency. ETEC is isolated in 0 to 5% of cases. Symptoms of poisoning develop after 16 hours from consumption of contaminated water, salads, cheeses, or meats. The outgrowth of ETEC rods takes place in a patient s gastrointestinal tract, where they produce thermostable and thermolabile toxins that imitate Vibrio cholerae infections. Stimulation of intestinal guanylcyclase and interruption of ion transport leads to watery stools, which do not require medical treatment or only need simple replacement of fluids and salts by means of multielectrolyte solutions. If a co-infection with EIEC strains occurs, the symptoms of enteritis will develop, with the presence of leukocytes, erythrocytes, and mucous in stools due to a cytotoxic influence of bacteria (Butterton and Claderwood, 2001). [Pg.337]

DCM is a Cabinet server that provides encyclopedic information of Chinese medicines and medical conditions from the book, A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine [42], It has over 220 000 searchable fields in four different languages (English, traditional Chinese, Pinyin and Latin). In Ayurvedic medicine, coconut oil infused with herbs has been used medicinally for almost 4000 years as an effective treatment for skin diseases caused by infestation with parasites, such as scabies and head lice. Today, about 20 billion coconuts are grown each year, and although the major producers are the Philippines, India, and Indonesia, virtually everywhere the coconut palm grows — in the tropical regions of Latin America and East Africa, as well as Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the Philippines — coconut products serve as a dietary staple. ... [Pg.513]

The outbreak of cholera in Latin America that started in Pein in January 1991 was caused in large part by the lack of effective water treatment and disinfection. The result was 1.2 million cases and 12,000 deaths from 1991 to 1998. [Pg.81]

Another useful experimental design for minimizing the effects of two types of inhomogeneity is the Youden square design. Latin squares must have the same number of levels for both of the blocking factors and the treatment factor Youden squares must have the same number of levels for the treatment factor and one of the blocking factors, but the number of levels for the other blocking factor can be... [Pg.250]

Pain involving muscles and bones is most often treated with salicylates. The name is derived from the Latin salix, meaning willow, which harks back to the Greek practice 2400 years ago of using extracts of the willow tree, Filipendula ulmaria, with coriander, Coriandrum sativum, for the treatment of pain, gout, and other conditions. Some 2000 years later, Native Americans were... [Pg.138]
