Large-scale production of natural

In nature, the green notes are produced after the destruction of the plants tissue (leaves, fruits or vegetables). Destruction of the cell wall leads to a cascade of enzyme-catalysed reactions polyunsaturated fatty acids with the diene system described before are converted into hydroperoxides by LOX catalysis. The hydroperoxide lyase cleaves the hydroperoxides in the whole cascade, oxireduc-tases are involved too. The biotechnological large-scale production of natural green notes follows the natural pathway. [Pg.496]

There has been steady refinement of those biotechnology aspects other than GM that an aggressor nation could misuse in developing an offensive BW capability important among the capabilities that could be misused are techniques for the large-scale production of natural or modified micro-organisms or toxins. .. [Pg.147]

Natural Gas Upgrading via Fischer-Tropsch. In the United States, as in other countries, scarcities from World War II revived interest in the synthesis of fuel substances. A study of the economics of Fischer synthesis led to the conclusion that the large-scale production of gasoline from natural gas offered hope for commercial utiHty. In the Hydrocol process (Hydrocarbon Research, Inc.) natural gas was treated with high purity oxygen to produce the synthesis gas which was converted in fluidized beds of kon catalysts (42). [Pg.81]

As indicated in Table 4, large-scale recovery of natural gas Hquid (NGL) occurs in relatively few countries. This recovery is almost always associated with the production of ethylene (qv) by thermal cracking. Some propane also is used for cracking, but most of it is used as LPG, which usually contains butanes as well. Propane and ethane also are produced in significant amounts as by-products, along with methane, in various refinery processes, eg, catalytic cracking, cmde distillation, etc (see Petroleum). They either are burned as refinery fuel or are processed to produce LPG and/or cracking feedstock for ethylene production. [Pg.400]

Methods for the large-scale production of hydrogen must be evaluated in the context of environmental impact and cost. Synthesis gas generation is the principal area requiring environmental controls common to all syngas-based processes. The nature of the controls depends on the feedstock and method of processing. [Pg.428]

MammaBan. For mammalian proteins, mammalian cells offer the most natural host for expression. Problems of incorrect processing and post-translational modification are avoided using these cells. Mammalian cells are usually grown in continuous cell culture, reducing the variabiUty in results (see Cell CULTURE technology). Moderate-level production of native protein is possible. The procedure, however, is slow and very cosdy, and the level of protein expression is low. Thus large-scale production of proteins in mammalian cells is not practical. When low quantities of protein are sufficient, this system offers the several advantages described. [Pg.200]

Synthetic activity associated with the carbonyl-ene reaction is extensive. During the past decade, the trend has been to perform these reactions in the presence of a Lewis acid in an enantioselective fashion. Efforts to find a general catalyst that affords homoallylic alcohols in high yields and enantioselectivities are continual. The synthetic utility of this reaction has been validated by its application to the synthesis of a number of natural products (see Section 10.12.6) and many structurally novel motifs that have found a place in drug discovery vide infra). It is the latter application that has resulted in research efforts aimed at large-scale production of carbonyl-ene adducts. [Pg.558]

Of course it can be argued that the growth we are now seeing merely represents the logical development of the industry once having achieved commercial success in high volume separation of pure oxides by solvent extraction it would seem only natural that the industry should then turn its attention to large scale production of the metals. But in practice it has not worked out that... [Pg.167]

Ethylene is the basis for a large number of chemical reactions leading to styrene, acrylonitrile, Orion, and other synthetic fibers. Large scale production of ethylene for chemical raw material has recently been announced by one major oil company. Part will be made from natural gas ethane. [Pg.256]

At a time when the only practicable methods for the preparation of nitromethane were the interaction of methyl iodide with silver nitrite and the Kolbe reaction from chloracetic acid, the explosive was far too expensive to merit consideration. The present cheap and large scale production of nitromethane by the vapor-phase nitration of methane and of ethane has altered the situation profoundly. Trimethylolnitromethane trinitrate is an explosive which can now be produced from coke, air, and natural gas. Nitromethane too has other interest for the manufacturer of explosives. It may be used as a component of liquid explosives, and it yields on reduction methylamine which is needed for the preparation of tetryl. [Pg.284]
