Tooth and tusk ivory can be carved into an almost infinite variety of shapes and objects. A small example of carved ivory objects are small (50) statuary, netsukes, jewelry, flatware handles, furniture inlays, and piano keys. Additionally, wart hog tusks, and teeth from sperm whales, killer whales, and hippos can also be scrimshawed or superficially carved, thus retaining their original shapes as morphologically recognizable objects. [Pg.200]

Disorders similar to CHS in humans have been reported in beige mice, Aleutian mink, Hereford cattle and killer whales, and neutrophil dysfunctions similar to those reported in humans are apparent in these animals. Therapy of CHS in humans usually consists of careful management of infections with appropriate antibiotics, although improvements have been reported following administration of high doses of ascorbic acid. Bone-marrow transplantation offers some hope to these patients, especially those entering the accelerated phase of the disease. [Pg.279]

PCB contamination has been observed in the toothed whales iOdontocett) that consume fish, seabird, and other marine mammals. Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus, which feed on deepwater squid, have intermediate loads, whereas the predatory dolphins, which feed closer to the surface, carry higher loads. The highest loads have been observed in killer whales (Orcinus orca ), whose diets consists of salmon and seal. In contrast, the baleen whales (Mysttcett) carry much lower loads as their diet is composed of zooplankton. Even whales living in the middle of the ocean fer from land have detectable levels of PCBs and DDT. [Pg.839]

Small cetaceans from the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean, North Atlantic coast of US, Baltic Sea, Scandinavian waters, and Atlantic coast of Canada were analyzed for specific CB congeners and a few large whale species have been analyzed thoroughly for PCBs, such as the sperm whale, beaked whale, killer whale, minke, fin, blue, and humpback whales [52]. [Pg.146]

It is most usual to come across ivory from the sperm whale (cachalot), and the orca (killer whale). These two are here grouped together due to the similarity of the structure of their teeth. [Pg.63]

Farther north in Newport, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is home to Willy, the killer whale made famous in the Disney film Free Willy. The local cooperative, Oceana Natural Foods Co-op (159 SE 2nd St., n 541-265-8285) has a deli for sandwiches, soups, salads and juices. [Pg.200]
