DON concentrations of 4-8 pM have been observed in the relatively weak upweUing area off the northwest coast of Spain (Alvarez-Salgado et al., 1999). HUl and Wheeler (2002) reported values of 7 pM DON in upweUed waters off the Oregon coast. These are similar DON concentrations to the open ocean as summarized Table 17.3 of HiU and Wheeler (2002). Some of this DON is upweUed e.g., water at 50 m depth off Oregon had a mean value of 5.98 (HUl and Wheeler, 2002). Another source is from production by phytoplankton as they partition newly assimilated NO3 into particulate nitrogen and DON that is released (Bronk et al., 2006 Wetz and Wheeler, 2003). [Pg.777]

Farther north in Newport, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is home to Willy, the killer whale made famous in the Disney film Free Willy. The local cooperative, Oceana Natural Foods Co-op (159 SE 2nd St., n 541-265-8285) has a deli for sandwiches, soups, salads and juices. [Pg.200]

With regard to radioactive zinc, the content of Zn in marine organisms was investigated in connection with the wastewater from nuclear reactors (Carey and Cutshall 1973). Subhorizontal drains may be ineffective in clays and other fine-grained soils. Therefore, the possibility of poor performance should be considered when assessing the relative merits of subhorizontal drains to other remedial measures. Figure 11.13 illustrates some of the more common situations where subhorizontal drains can be used for slope stabilization (Cornforth, 2005). A case study of a large landslide on the southern Oregon coast, stabilized by a vertical shaft and horizontal drains, is discussed by Cornforth (2005) and illustrated in Figure 11.14. [Pg.339]
