Historically, the role of statistics in biomedical research has been largely to test hypotheses. More recently, there has been a move to supplant hypothesis tests from their dominant position by confidence intervals. This move has been endorsed by The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and climaxed with the publication, under the auspices of the British... [Pg.284]

A scientist should not proclaim a discovery to the public unless the experimental, statistical, or theoretical support for it is of strength sufficient to warrant publication in the scientific literature. An account of the experimental work and results that support a public pronouncement should be submitted as quickly as possible for publication in a scientific journal. Scientists should, however, be aware that disclosure of research results in the public press or in an electronic database or bulletin board might be considered by a journal editor as equivalent to a preliminary communication in the scientific literature. [Pg.16]

Journal editors and multiauthored book editors send accepted manuscripts directly to the publisher. Authors of monographs interact directly with the publisher, generally through an acquisitions editor. Accepted manuscripts go through three phases before publication technical editing, proofing and review by the author, and correction by the publisher. [Pg.33]

The U.S. copyright law also provides remedies for infringement. Authors should contact the appropriate book or journal editor in cases where they believe their work has been infringed upon. If a copyright owner (in the case of an ACS publication, the ACS) believes that his or her work has been infringed upon, it is the responsibility of the copyright owner to bring action. [Pg.80]

The IUCr Web site (http //www.iucr.org/iucr-top/cif/) lists other software that can be used to manipulate or visualize CIF content. Most importantly, they maintain a Web-based service that provides a classihed validation report on any format-compliant CIF. This service can be accessed at http //checkcif.iucr.org/. CheckCIF reports can be lengthy, but it is wise to scan them carefully, particularly the most serious Class A alerts. Journal editors and their referees will often indicate the types of alerts that they would normally expect to be fixed by the authors before publication. [Pg.286]

Peer review is the process by which scientific results produced by one group are subjected to the analysis of other experts in the field. In practice it is most often used by scientific journals. Scientists author manuscripts detailing their experiments, results, and interpretations and these manuscripts are distributed by the journal editors to other researchers in the field for review prior to publication. The authors must address the comments and questions of the reviewers and make appropriate revisions for their work to be accepted for publication. Peer review is also the process by which applications for research funds are evaluated and awarded. Peer review may also be used informally by groups of researchers or graduate students wishing to get an evaluation of their research prior to writing it up for publication. [Pg.54]

With a view to the second recommendation concerning restrictions in the publication of problematic research a number of journal editors had imposed restrictions on themselves already before the publication of the Fink Committee s report in January 2003 a group of 32 journal editors agreed on guidelines related to Scientific Publication and Security. After first being published in Science, the statement also appeared in February in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and in Nature.80 The authors of the statement ... [Pg.65]

Some of the best work to date on the nature and ethics of authorship has been done by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). The most current version of its work is contained in a 2013 document Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Joimials. Recommendations are made on five authorship-related topics the nature of authorship, responsibilities of authors (including matters related to conflicts of interest), responsibilities of authors and referees in the submission and peer-review processes, responsibilities of journal owners, and the protection of research participants. ... [Pg.57]

For many years, the registration in a public data bank of aU clinical trials — from start to completion and reporting of results — has seemed a quixotic quest of some academic researchers, medical-journal editors, and librarians. Within the past two months, however, a constellation of events and developments has broadened this effort and captured the... [Pg.316]

Information about this splendid compilation came to me from a chemist, Robert Weast (1985), who was editor from 1952 until 1988... 37 years He also informed me that the creation (jointly by the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Physics) of the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data, which began publication in 1972, was encouraged by the results of a survey which indicated how widely the Rubber Bible was used. Weast describes this journal as a truly outstanding source of critically evaluated data . In saying this, he underlined the crucial role of editors and contributors critical judgment in selecting data for such compilations. David Tide, the editor of the journal, in 1989 succeeded Robert... [Pg.493]
