Job safety programs

This chapter will discuss the safe work procedures needed to ensure that employees are properly trained on the safety requirements of their task and able to demonstrate this knowledge and performance in their every day duties. Finally, this is observed by management to provide encouragement, training, and corrective action as appropriate. 

Four techniques will be discussed to help with these problems. They are Job Safety Analysis, Job Safety Training, Knowledge Reviews, and Work Observations. 

Accident Any unplanned event that results in personal injury or property damage. Hazard Any condition that may result in the occurrence of, or contribution to an accident. 

Job A definite sequence of steps or separate activities that together lead to the completion of a work assignment. 

Job Step A single and separate activity that clearly advances a work assignment and is a logical portion of that assignment.

Knowing the hazards of a job is very important. Chapter 3 on Job Safety Programs will aid in addressing job (workers ) safety. The chapter will explain job safety analysis (JSA) procedures to help make tasks safer for the workers. The chapter will also focus in on work-specific safety training and work observations and will touch on the subject of record keeping.

Off-the-job safety. Does the company have an effective off-the-job safety program ... 

Adequate resources are fundamental to any project, but even more so to a well-functioning health and safety program. Many mishaps have been traced to improperly trained workers, lack of adequate tools and equipment, or requirements for personnel to work excessive hours or at unfamiliar jobs because of inadequate staffing or lack of adequate resources. The multidisciplinary team approach can help to identify required resources and can help balance, identify, and coordinate necessary assets.

It is also important to recognize the causes of accidental deaths, as shown in Table 1-5. Because most, if not all, company safety programs are directed toward preventing injuries to employees, the programs should include off-the-job safety, especially training to prevent accidents with motor vehicles. 

Because an effective safety program in the plant or facility must include training, the ultimate objective of training is to influence the attitudes of employees around the clock. Off-the-job accidents cost industry many times more than on-the-job injuries. Although workers compensation is not involved, absenteeism from off-the-job injuries results in productivity losses and insurance cost increases. Employees injured off the job may, with the assistance of unscrupulous lawyers, sometimes claim the injury occurred during work time. Such fraud can be combatted by effective record keeping and supervisory vigilance. 

Overall, the assessor s job is to ensure that management systems are in place, that they are effective, and they are being followed. Rather than checking on the details of the safety program, the assessor will evaluate management systems and their effectiveness. 

The chart shows a remarkable drop in the incident rate as the number of unplanned jobs goes down. (It could also be that those companies that are well organized have both better maintenance planning and good safety programs—they both share the same cause.)...
