Phenyl-4,5-diaminoisoxazole hydrochloride (69) reacted with isoamyl nitrite in THF to afford the diazo compound (70), which underwent immediate closure on treatment with aqueous base (5% NaOH) to furnish 3-phenylisoxazolo[4,5-d -1,2,3-triazole (71). The isoxazolotriazole, which resulted in essentially quantitative yield, is a relatively stable compound <70T1393>. Treatment of (71) with acetic anhydride afforded the 6-acetyl derivative, which does not share the stability of its precursor and decomposes rapidly in acid solution (Scheme 15). 

In addition to a-furildioxime, other oximes are used as spectrophotometric reagents for rhenium, such as dimethylglyoxime [7,48,49], a-pyridyldioxime [50], a-benzoinoxime [51], methyl-2-pyridylketoxime [52], and phenyl-2-pyridylketoxime [53]. ot-Benzoyldioxime gives with Re, in thiocyanate medium, a complex (A-max = 430 nm) extractable into isoamyl acetate [54]. In each case the colour reaction occurs in the presence of SnCh.

To a solution of ( )-a-(3,5-dimethoxy-4-((phenylsulfonyl)oxy)phenyl)-2-amino-4,5-dimethoxycinnamic acid [91 ] (52, 0.92 g, 1.9 mmol) in acetone (150 ml), H2SO4 (0.21 ml, 3.8 mmol, 96%) was added dropwise at 0 C followed by isoamyl nitrite (3.8 mmol, 2 eq.). After 1 h, sodium iodide (1.14 g, 4 eq.) was added in four portions over a 5-h period, the solution was stirred for an additional hour, and enough sodium bisulfite was added to turn the reaction mixture yellow, whereupon it was poured into water (400 ml) and extracted with chloroform (4x50 ml). The organic phases were combined, washed with water (3x100 ml), dried (Na2S04), and evaporated to yield the crude product which was purified by crystallization from ethyl acetate / -hexane to afford 629 mg (71%) of pure 53, m.p. 155.5-158.5 C. 

As described by Lambrechts and Pretorius (2000) and Verstrepen et al. (2003), esters possess a range of odors such as solvent-hke or nail polish (ethyl acetate), fruity, pear, or banana (isoamyl acetate), floral or fruity (ethyl butanoate), sour apple (ethyl caproate and ethyl caprylate), and flowery, roses, or honey (phenyl ethyl acetate). Given the number of different esters present in varying concentrations produced by yeasts, there is little doubt that wine aroma can be strongly influenced by these compounds (Schreier, 1979).
