ISO test methods

Specifications from other sources (e.g., ASTM, military) may be used if they are applicable, and often test methods from ASTM, etc., are used within a customer specification. The trend is to use well-established ASTM or ISO test methods where possible rather than nonstandard or proprietary tests. 

Closely related to preventive action is the process audit. Such an audit is performed as part of a laboratory assessment for each test on the proposed scope of accreditation. Performance of a test procedure is observed relative not only to the requirements of the ISO 17025 standard (or ISO Guide 25) but also with respect to performing the ASTM or ISO test method properly. As a minimum, the laboratory must have properly calibrated equipment, the current test method, and trained testing personnel. In addition, a representative number of test demonstrations will reveal whether good laboratory practices are observed in sample preparation, using the correct test parameters and calculating the results. When operators and technicians accept responsibility through such demonstrations, they tend to commit to the quality process. Real improvement occurs with involvement at all levels. 

The ISO test method 2313 1972 is essentially the same procedure as option 2 of AATCC Test Metliod 66-2003. 

An indication of variability is illustrated on the graphs by means of error bars. These were derived from standard deviations for repeatability taken mostly from precision statements in ASTM and ISO test method standards. The repeatability standard deviations were multiplied by 2 to give the 95% confidence intervals. It will be appreciated that these error bars simply give an idea of the degree of scatter which might generally be expected. 

For measuring compressive modulus, the. v// ratio should not be less than 0.08. while for other tests it should not be less than 0.4. The smaller ratio for the modulus test is permitted since the strain range required for the test is so small and hence the point of buckling is unlikely to be reached. The measurement of shear strength and modulus is relatively little used in the context of general plastics testing, although the tests arc more frequently applied to rubbers (Chapter 15) and composites (Chapter 18). While there arc no general ISO test methods, there arc BS and ASTM tests.

It is worth noting that ISO/IEC and ASTM test methods for many properties, in principle, are similar and the differences between the specific test methods are rather minimal. Even so, differences in measured data between the two methods, depending on the type of material, are expected, particularly with thickness-dependent properties such as impact strength, DTUL, and flexural properties stemming from the variance in test specimen dimensions and its preparation. Thus, any correlation between two sets of data is dependent on the material type, implying that one should not assume that the property values generated by the ISO test methods would always be equivalent to the values obtained by using the ASTM method with simple conversion to appropriate units.
