An initial common reference point presented to this diverse group was the widely cited definition of sustainability developed by the Brundtland Commission—formally known as the World Commission on Environment and Development— which was convened in 1983 by the United Nations General Assembly to examine the interdependence of all sectors of society in achieving sustainable development  [Pg.6]

The sample handling unit includes tubes, injection devices, reactors, mixing chambers and connectors, all of which are designed to permit efficient sample manipulation for accomplishing the different analytical steps involved. There are instruments where the entire unit is replaced in order to implement a different analytical procedure. The unit is then called a manifold. If options for extending the field life have been exhausted, then decommissioning will be necessary. Federal regulations (40 CFR 261) classify acrylonitrile as a hazardous waste and it is Hsted as Hazardous Waste Number U009. Disposal must be in accordance with federal (40 CFR 262, 263, 264), state, and local regulations only at properly permitted faciUties. It is Hsted as a toxic pollutant (40 CFR 122.21) and introduction into process streams, storm water, or waste water systems is in violation of federal law. Strict guidelines exist for clean-up and notification of leaks and spills. The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) was enacted in 1976 to identify and control toxic chemical ha2ards to human health and the environment. One of the main provisions of TSCA was to estabUsh and maintain an inventory of all chemicals in commerce in the United States for the purpose of regulating any of the chemicals that might pose an unreasonable risk to human health or the environment. An initial inventory of chemicals was estabhshed by requiring companies to report to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) all substances that were imported, manufactured, processed, distributed, or disposed of in the United States. Over 50,000 chemical substances were reported. PoUowing this initial inventory, introduction of all new chemical substances requires a Premanufacturing Notification (PMN) process. To be included in the PMN are the identity of the new chemical, the estimated first year and maximum production volume, manufacture and process information, a description of proposed use, potential release to the environment, possible human exposure to the new substance, and any health or environmental test data available at the time of submission. In the 10 years that TSCA has been in effect, the USEPA has received over 10,000 PMNs and up to 10% of the submissions each year are for dyes (382)... [Pg.388]

Mixing of fluids is a discipline of fluid mechanics. Fluid motion is used to accelerate the otherwise slow processes of diffusion and conduction to bring about uniformity of concentration and temperature, blend materials, facihtate chemical reactions, bring about intimate contact of multiple phases, and so on.
