Advancements in Engineering

This review summarises the recent advances in engineering microbial and plant cells for flavour production. Examples from a number of compound classes will be presented to illustrate the use of transgenic organisms as sources for biocatalysts utilised in fermentation processes, as well as the application of metabolic engineering to produce a specific desired compound.

The regulation of drug input into the body is the core tenet of controlled release drug delivery systems. With advances in engineering and material sciences, controlled release delivery systems are able to mimic multiple kinetic types of input, ranging from instantaneous to complex kinetic order. In this section three of the most common input functions found in controlled release drug delivery systems will be discussed— instantaneous, zero order, and first order. 

Better engineering. More compact reactors, elimination of unwanted byproducts even if in traces, better reactor control and heat recovery can be achieved by advances in engineering.

The internal combustion engine, running on gasoline, has been powering transportation for almost a century. Advances in engines and fuels, such as reformulated gasoline, have reduced the pollution of these engines.

There is, however, no single physiologieal system that can cover all needs for gathering data on questions raised in the field. Therefore, we strongly recommend using a multivariate approach that includes measures for at least each of the three kinds of arousal mentioned in Fig. 1.1 and, if applicable, for the different kinds of strain mentioned in Table 1.1. Proper advances in engineering psychophysiology as a not-so-new scientific discipline can only be made if applications accompany improvements in the theoretical framework.
