Intra-arterial infusion

The development of injectable mictocapsules for deUvery of chemotherapy agents remains another active area of research. The ultimate goal is to achieve targeted deUvery of chemotherapy agents to specific sites in the body, ideaUy by injection of dmg-loaded mictocapsules that would seek out and destroy diseased ceUs. Intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy is a direct approach to targeted deUvery. The clinical appHcations of microspheres and mictocapsules in embolization and chemotherapy have been assessed (49) (see Chemotherapeutics, anticancer). [Pg.324]

Pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), arterial thrombosis and embolism (given within 7 days of onset) IV Infusion (1.5 million units diluted to 90 ml). Initially, 250,000 units infused over 30 min then, 100,000 units/hr for 24-72 hr for arterial thrombosis or embolism, and pulmonary embolism, 72 hr for DVT. Intra-arterial Infusion (1.5 million units diluted to 45 ml). Initially, 250,000 units infused over 30 min then 100,000 units/hr for maintenance. [Pg.1152]

Retinal toxicity usually begins within 2 to 14 weeks after intra-arterial infusion of BCNU. Approximately 65% of patients develop retinal complications (Box 35-5). It is common to have loss of vision from the retinopathy, and visual acuity can be reduced to 20/60, to light perception, or even to no light perception. A definite relationship... [Pg.732]

Ergot derivatives are powerful vasoconstrictors. The extremities become pale and cold, and arterial spasm in the arms and legs has been demonstrated even the face can be affected. The condition can develop acutely even after brief use of the drug, and there is real risk of gangrene if given early, intra-arterial infusion of prostaglandin El can reverse the spasms. Protracted coronary spasm has... [Pg.1230]

Floxuridine is a pyrimidine antimetabolite with its primary effect to interfere with the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and to a lesser extent inhibit the formation of ribonucleic acid (RNA). It is indicated in palliative management of GI adenocarcinoma metastatic to the liver administered by continuous regional intra-arterial infusion as long as cancer does not extend beyond the area perfused by a single artery. Floxuridine, an antimetabolite and anti-neoplastic agent (0.1 to 0.6 mg/kg daily by intra-arterial infusion), is used to treat brain, breast, head, neck, liver, gallbladder, and bile duct cancer (see also Figure 15). [Pg.274]

Lethal pancytopenia in 2 patients given methotrexate and aspirin prompted a retrospective survey of the records of other patients given intra-arterial infusions of methotrexate 50 mg daily for 10 days, for epidermoid carcinoma of the oral cavity. Six out of 7 who developed rapid and serious pancytopenia were found to have taken aspirin or other salicylates. There are other case reports of methotrexate toxicity in patients taking salicylates but whether a causal relationship exists is uncertain. It has been suggested that pneumonitis in patients receiving low-dose methotrexate may have resulted from the concurrent use of aspirin 4 to 5 g daily. ... [Pg.649]
