Imagine a sphere of dazzling white brilliance above your head. Then, with an exhalation of breath, see a beam of white light descend and form another sphere of white light at the throat area. On an out-breath, see a beam descend from the second sphere to establish a third in your chest region. Continue the same process to build a fourth sphere in your... [Pg.23]

Modeling of Annular Flow Region. Continuing with this simple example, we next consider the annular flow region. The balanced equation for this region has the form... [Pg.255]

Because the kinetic and mass-transport phenomena occur in a thin region adjacent to the electrode surface, this area is treated separately from the bulk solution region. Since kinetic effects are manifested within 100 A of the electrode surface, the resulting overpotential is invariably incorporated in the boundary conditions of the problem. Mass transport in the boundary layer is often treated by a separate solution of the convective diffusion equation in this region. Continuity of the current can then be imposed as a matching condition between the boundary layer solution and the solution in the bulk electrolyte. Frequently, Laplace s equation can be used to describe the potential distribution in the bulk electrolyte and provide the basis for determining the current distribution in the bulk electrolyte. [Pg.247]

Malaria is a devastating disease caused by protozoan parasites from the genus Plasmodium. While reported cases of malaria decreased by 50% between 2000 and 2010, 216 million cases and almost 700,000 malaria-related deaths were reported in 2010 (1). In addition, 86% of these malaria deaths claimed the lives of children under 5 years of age. The African Region continues to bear the brunt of the malaria burden with an estimated 81% of all reported malaria cases. In general, tropical and subtropical regions have the greatest rates of malaria transmission as the climate in these regions supports development of the mosquito vector. [Pg.205]

Most of the early gas lasers emitted in the visible region. Continuous-wave (CW) lasers such as Ar+ (351.1-514.5 nm), Kr+ (337.4-676.4 nm), and He-Ne (632.8 nm) are now commonly used for Raman spectroscopy. More recently, pulsed lasers such as Nd YAG, diode, and excimer lasers have been used for time-resolved and ultraviolet (UV) resonance Raman spectroscopy. [Pg.97]

In pyrolysis-mass spectrometry (Py-MS) the pyrolysate is directly transferred to a mass spectrometer and analyzed, generating a complex spectrum. The sample introduction can be done using various techniques. One simple technique is the direct insertion probe (DIP) where the sample is deposited on an insert that has the capability of heating the sample and of introducing the pyrolysate directly into the ion source of the mass spectrometer (see e.g. [1]). Another technique is the Curie point Py-MS where an attachment to the mass spectrometer allows the sample to be placed in a radio frequency (RF) region continued by an expansion chamber connected to the ion source. The sample is pyrolyzed and the pyrolysate ionized and analyzed in the MS instrument. A schematic diagram of a Curie point Py-MS system is shown in Figure 3.3.2. [Pg.139]

A fresh—brackish-water (significantly less saline than seawater) wedge extends under the Atlantic Ocean as far as 120 km from shore, down to depths greater than 600 m. This phenomenon was reported in papers cited earlier and is discussed in considerable detail by Kohout (1981), and Pauli and Dillon (1981). The evidence suggests that boundaries are much smoother and more regionally continuous than on land. These boundary characteristics are consistent with predictions based on the mobility of water influenced by artesian circulation (land) relative to the mobility of water in largely diffusive fluxes (beneath the sea). [Pg.101]

This led to seal failure in the Halten Vest region whilst in the shallower and normally pressured Halten region continuous strata allow pressure bleed-olf towards the east. This acts to preserve petroleum in traps. [Pg.356]
