Intervention feedback

Low-fidelity simulators are generaUy focused on single skiUs that allow learners practice in isolation, on their own time, without much required feedback. Medium-fidelity simulators are more realistic in their representation of the task, but lack sufficient cues for the learner to be fuUy immersed in the situation. High-fidelity simulators provide adequate cues and feedback to aUow for fuU immersion and response to treatment interventions. One important experimental result was available, the quantitative measurement of the fraction of each secondary structural element by circular dichroism (CD) on purified lipid-protein complexes. This provided a constraint that allowed a careful evaluation of the secondary structure predictions derived from the various approaches, some of which were developed for water-soluble proteins and therefore of uncertain reliability for proteins in a lipid environment. The data from these analyses were combined using an integrated prediction method to arrive at a consensus secondary structure model for each protein. The integrated method involved 36 steps, with independent predictions at each step. The final model was based on an evaluation of the various predictions, with judicious intervention by the authors. As an aid to developing the appropriate weighting of all the data, they carried out the analysis for apoE-3 without reference to the available crystal structure (Wilson et al., 1991), then used the known structure of the HDL-binding amino-terminal domain of apoE-3 as feedback to reevaluate the weighting. [Pg.345]

Brief interventions can be as simple as feedback about the consequences of heavy alcohol use for a person (for example, You have some liver problems, and we can trace it to your drinking ) or advice to cut down or stop drinking. They are based on the idea that alcohol problems exist on a continuum of severity and that interventions can occur at any point along that continuum. The research has shown that for the most part brief interventions have been used with people who have mild to moderate alcohol problems they are effective compared to no treatment in reducing alcohol consumption to below risk levels. There is some speculation about who is most helped by brief interventions and why they work. These clearly are topics for future research. [Pg.394]

Research on dmg transport across the BBB and its functionality has been very much enhanced by the availability of in vitro BBB endothelial/astrocyte (co)-culture systems. The use of such systems allows a detailed investigation of BBB-related phenomena at the (sub)-cellular level and in the absence of feedback systems from the rest of the body. This makes it much easier to study in vitro BBB transport and BBB functionality by (pharmacological) intervention techniques, such as the application of receptor agonists and antagonists, blockers of transporters and enzymes, antisense and (anti)gene approaches, and the influence of disease. Recently, BBB (co)-culture systems have been reviewed and discussed with respect to their use in BBB-related research (30,31). [Pg.633]
