Feedback importance

Another important reaction supporting nonlinear behaviour is the so-called FIS system, which involves a modification of the iodate-sulfite (Landolt) system by addition of ferrocyanide ion. The Landolt system alone supports bistability in a CSTR the addition of an extra feedback chaimel leads to an oscillatory system in a flow reactor. (This is a general and powerfiil technique, exploiting a feature known as the cross-shaped diagram , that has led to the design of the majority of known solution-phase oscillatory systems in flow... 

Biochemical pathways consist of networks of individual reactions that have many feedback mechanisms. This makes their study and the elucidation of kinetics of individual reaction steps and their regulation so difficult. Nevertheless, important inroads have already been achieved. Much of this has been done by studying the metabolism of microorganisms in fermentation reactors. 

Figure 1.3 shows an outline of the analytical approach along with some important considerations at each step. Three general features of this approach deserve attention. First, steps 1 and 5 provide opportunities for analytical chemists to collaborate with individuals outside the realm of analytical chemistry. In fact, many problems on which analytical chemists work originate in other fields. Second, the analytical approach is not linear, but incorporates a feedback loop consisting of steps 2, 3, and 4, in which the outcome of one step may cause a reevaluation of the other two steps. Finally, the solution to one problem often suggests a new problem. 

Control of secretion of anterior pituitary hormones also includes inhibition by hormones produced by target organs. For example, CRH stimulates the anterior pituitary to secrete ACTH, which in turn stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete corticosteroids. Corticosteroids then feed back to inhibit the secretion of ACTH. Feedback mechanisms are important for the control of most hormones. For example, insulin (qv) secretion from the pancreas increases in response to increased blood glucose resulting from ingestion of a meal. Insulin increases tissue uptake and metaboHsm of glucose, which lowers blood glucose and in turn reduces insulin secretion. 

Meridional circulation in two-dimensional stratospheric models has been specified based on observations or general circulation model calculations recendy efforts have been undertaken to calculate circulations from first principles, within the stratospheric models themselves. An important limitation of using models in which circulations are specified is that these caimot be used to study the feedbacks of changing atmospheric composition and temperature on transport, factors which may be important as atmospheric composition is increasingly perturbed. 

Due to the complexity of the economics, it is necessary to look at each installation individually. It is very difficult to state generalities, but the SDG E story provides important feedback. 

Feedback that confirms I am doing the right thing is important for error recovery as well as for error prevention. It is important to display the actual position of what the operator is manipulating, as well as the state of the variable he/she is worried about. 

Developing mechanisms for soliciting feedback. Pilot participants feedback and input are crucial not otdy for the test itself, but, more important, to enable the PSM team to refine the system for full implementation. Experience shows that the more quality feedback you receive, the more responsive you can be to customer requirements. The way you solicit... 

Regardless of the method(s) you select, it s important to get feedback from the full spectrum of people affected by the pilot. No matter how "tuned in" fadlity managers maybe, they may lack the day-to-day perspective you need... 

Remember that installing your PSM system will not happen overnight, and it probably won t happen perfectly. Try not to become impatient your hard work will pay off if you encourage feedback and recognize the need for continuous reinforcement—at all levels—of the importance of safety improvement. 

Such feedback, from anyone who interacts with the system by providing input, using information, or receiving reports, can greatly enhance the effectiveness of the new PSM system. System users may have important suggestions about how to improve or streamline a system, or may not clearly understand its importance or the part they play in its implementation. At the same time, soliciting—and acting on—user feedback helps underscore the collaborative nature of PSM cmd the fact that its success depends on the user.
