Internet meeting

In five years time (i.e., in 50 Internet years time) we won t be having another Chemint ( Chemistry and the Internet ) meeting. We might have "Molecular Sciences on the Internet" but we won t call the scientists. "chemists . The metaphor we call the Net will change. You won t need a wire or optic fiber to connect your computers you will use wireless transmission. Alan Arnold...

The NDT Newsgroup and other forums are playing an important role in expediting meeting and communieation among your NDT colleagues on the Internet - Email is the most important tool for that. Not only technical discussions but also business to business or even direct inquiries are today handled via the Internet. Statistics are presented with more information on specific usage. 

Promoting the formation of support networks - either where people can physically meet up or virtual ones where members of a particular group (e.g. mentors or relationship supervisors) have their own secure chatroom and noticeboard on the company intranet or on the Internet. 

It is worth noting that the past few years have witnessed tremendous development of web-based information resources. Notably, the PubMed search tool [4] has made the investigation of any life sciences topic much easier. It offers keyword and author (as well as structure and sequence) searches and covers a wide range of medicinal chemistry-related journals. This resource, coupled with e-journals, affords the medicinal chemist the tools to keep up with any research topics of interest. Because of the public nature of the Web, now a chemist can sometimes find critical journal articles on the Web that do not show up until much later in traditional literature sources. It is not uncommon that scientific meeting presentations can be found on the Web. Indeed, the Internet tools we have all become familiar with also have made the professional life of the medicinal chemist much easier.

The Internet is already the main source of drug information for many patients. They will relate to, and ask about, this information when they meet health professionals. Not only can the Internet be a source of information about drugs. Recently, our centre has dealt with several cases of severe side-effects from unregistered drugs purchased over the Internet. 

Depending on the type (standard vs. exclusive products) and the importance of a business transaction (small single-order vs. major multiyear supply contract), the levels of customer intimacy can vary between purchasing through the Internet with no personal contacts between the parties involved on one hand and frequent face-to-face meetings between the commercial (and other pertinent) functions of the involved companies on the other hand (see Figure 12.7) ...

Over the past few decades, sleep deprivation has become a nationwide problem in the United States. With our schedules full of things like homework, sports, jobs, school club meetings and activities, socializing with friends, dating, and family commitments, we often sacrifice an hour or two (or more) of sleep to squeeze in a few extra activities. With cable TV and movie channels available 24 hours a day, supermarkets open around the clock, and the Internet available whenever you want, we have become a society in which, unfortunately, sleep takes a back seat to our other wants and needs.

The next step of the business planning process is to explore the prospects for various types of value-added services. At this point it is helpful to have several ideas for value-added services that could be implemented. One of the best ways to do this is to observe and speak with pharmacy department customers. This is essential to learn more about their needs and can help business planners learn more about their environments (which will be important later in the process). Other sources for ideas about value-added pharmacy services include colleagues, professional organizations, pharmacy magazines and journals, professional meetings and seminars, the Internet, consultants, books, and full-service wholesalers.
