International Organization industry

The standards and requirements against which applicants are judged are the IFOAM Basic Standards and Criteria - requirements developed by the international organic industry with organic integrity, transparency and stakeholder participation as core values. 

To meet this requirement such a list was prepared by UNEP and has been continuously updated with the assistance of expert groups and circulated among governments, international organizations, industry and non-governmental organizations for action and comments. 

At the international level, the official organization is the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and its counterpart for the electrical industries, the lEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). 

Besides internal quaUty audits, there are audits conducted by external authorities for conformance to estabUshed quaUty systems. The two chief standards affecting the chemical industry are the U.S. Food and Dmg Administration Current Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulation and the International Organization for Standardization ISO 9000 series. Since 1994, the automotive industry in the USA and Europe has been operating quality system certification schemes that extended the requirements of ISO 9001, ISO 10011, and EN 45012. One of these schemes was addressed by my QS-9000 Quality S /stems Handbook, published in 1996. In the same year the automakers of the USA and Europe formed the International Automotive Task Force (lATF) which, in cooperation with the technical committee of the International Organization of Standardization (TO 176), produced ISO/TS 16949. Use of and registration to this new standard is currently voluntary. It is intended that following the first revision to incorporate ISO 9000 2000, the ISO/TS 16949 certification scheme will be mandated by all major vehicle manufacturers on their Tier 1 suppliers. As a result, the standard will be cascaded along the supply chain, ultimately reaching all suppliers to the global automotive industry. 

The primary pump types for the chemical industry for horizontal and vertical inline applications have been standardized in ANSI B-123, ANSI Std B73.1M for horizontal end suction centrifugal pumps, and ANSI B73.2M for vertical inline centrifugal pumps. The standards are in a continuous process of upgrading to suit requirements of industry and the manufacturers. The API-610 standard is primarily a heavy duty application, such as is used for the refinery and chemical industry requirements. This is the only true world pump [21] standard, although the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is studying such an improved design [20]. 

However, most other types of organizations (such as the millions of commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings and facilities globally) do not produce water or steam as a primary product. Rather, they focus on their own market arenas, with the result that, by and large, they lack adequate skilled water treatment expertise and resources internally. These industries therefore employ water treatment service companies as specialist contractors. 

Recently, a new method of nomenclature of TPEs was produced jointly by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Association of the Automotive Industries (VDA), Germany, and the producers of raw materials. Nevertheless, for this chapter the above-mentioned abbreviations for the TPEs have been utilized. Table 5.3 provides a list of significant suppliers of different generic classes of TPEs with respective trade names.

The terms of zero emission, zero discharge, cleaner production, waste minimization, pollution prevention, design for environment, material substitution, and dematerialization are all closely related, and each is self-explanatory. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and other national and international organizations at different periods of time have promoted each [8,19,23,30-34,39-46].

Reports are published following peer review by the Scientific Committee comprising members from various European industrial companies. ECETOC s publications are provided freely to all member companies and to other interested parties, such as the various regulatory authorities, international organizations, and academic groups. Most polymeric materials are controlled by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) with respect to the relationship between the name and content including fibers. While the FTC controls industry in the United States, the international standards are generally determined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Table 18.2 contains a brief listing of some of the ISO and FTC names for some of the most utilized fibers.
