Interim controls

The situation is now being reviewed, especially in light of the ready availability and low capital cost of chemical flue gas conditioning. Thus, if chemical conditioning can reduce gross emissions significantly, it may be required as an interim control, even if it does not bring the unit into compliance. [Pg.99]

C.F.R. 745.82(b). For this purpose only, emergency renovations are unplanned renovations in response to a sudden an unexpected event that presents a safety or health hazard. Interim controls to respond to elevated blood lead levels in children who live in the premises are also emergency responses that provide an exemption from the rules. [Pg.634]

The term reduction means measures designed to reduce or eliminate human exposure to lead-based paint hazards through methods including interim controls and abatement. [Pg.949]

Provide interim controls to protect workers from any hazards that cannot be controlled immediately. [Pg.136]

It is required by the law that a licensed contractor be hired for abatement work, and strongly recommended for any work where a lead-painted surface is disrupted, including interim controls and remodeling. You must be able to show that you used a certified lead abatement contractor in order to qualify for some state financial assistance programs, tax credits, or utility company rebates. [Pg.105]

For interim controls, lead-based paint was stabilized (sealed, intact, smooth, and cleanable) and friction and impact surfaces were treated properly. [Pg.124]

Records of all abatement, interim controls, inspection, and clearance results should be kept by the property owner as well as by the contractor and the clearance examiner. ... [Pg.127]

Sells HUD publications, including Guidelines for the Evaluation and Control of Lead-Based Paint Hazards in Housing, the basic source book for lead paint abatement and interim control, with detailed description of methods and standards used for HUD properties which serve as a model for hazard control work in private homes. [Pg.227]

When employees must be present and engineering or administrative controls are not feasible, it will be essential to use PPE as an interim control and not a final solution. For example, safety glasses may be required in the work area. Too often, PPE usage is considered the last thing to do in the scheme of hazard control. PPE can provide added protection to the employee even when the hazard is being controlled by other means. However, there are drawbacks to the use of PPE, including... [Pg.11]

All identified hazardous conditions should be eliminated or controlled immediately. Where this is not possible, interim control measures should be implemented immediately to protect workers, warning signs must be posted at the location of the hazard, all affected employees must be informed of the location of the hazard and of the required interim controls, and permanent control measures must be implemented as soon as possible. [Pg.76]

Interim control measures should be implemented immediately to protect workers. [Pg.214]

All affected employees should be informed of the location of the hazard and the required interim controls. [Pg.214]

A more recent piece of U.S. legislation with a lead focus was Title X of the Housing and Community Development Act, referred to as the 1992 Residential Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act or simply Title X. Tide X provides a number of steps to eliminate the most hazardous of lead-painted residences in public and certain classes of private housing. Its guiding purpose was to develop a national approach to creating infrastructure to eliminate hazards as rapidly as possible. Some provisions of the legislation as interpreted by HUD and EPA are controversial, particularly in the matter of interim controls of lead paint exposures in the most deteriorated living units. [Pg.825]

The guidelines address lead hazard controls in terms of both interim measures and lead paint abatements, where the interim controls refer to measures intended to temporarily reduce exposures of residents to lead paint hazards, such as specialized cleaning, repairs, maintenance, painting, hazard monitoring over time, and various educational approaches to foster awareness. With... [Pg.859]

In this Final Rule, U.S. HUD sets forth seven strategies for lead paint or paint hazard evaluation and hazard reduction, varying in relative stringency from least to most (1) safe work practices during rehabilitation (2) ongoing lead paint maintenance practices to assure continued intact surfaces (3) visual assessment and paint stabihzation (4) risk assessment and interim controls (as defined above) (5) combined risk assessment and lead paint inspection with interim controls (6) risk assessment and abatement of lead paint hazards and (7) lead-based paint inspection and abatement via removal of aU lead paint. [Pg.861]

Typical Applications (hazard controls) Dust removal and any abatement or interim control method disturbing no more than 2 square feet of painted surface per room. Any interim control or abatement method disturbing between 2 and 10 square feet of painted surface per room. Same as Level 2 Any interim control or abatement method disturbing more than 10 square feet per room. [Pg.25]

Finally, EPA has removed the word operations from the exception, in response to one commenter who suggested that the word is unnecessary and confnsing. EPA agrees that the word operations is unnecessary in its description of emergency renovations. EPA intends to continne interpreting the term emergency renovations in the same way that it always has done, except that EPA has clarified that interim controls performed in response to a child with an elevated blood-lead level can be an emergency renovation. [Pg.130]
