Throughout the years, my experience in the use, design and development of instrumental and automated techniques has been extremely wide. 

With the advent of modern techniques, instrumentation and automation in isolation and structural characterization, numerous antidiabetic compounds have been isolated, purified and identified from different natural sources, especially medicinal plants. This part summarizes promising natural chemical entities with diverse structures reported for their therapeutic activities against diabetes. These compounds are broadly categorized into alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolics, including compounds from other groups. 

The greatest change in test laboratories in recent times, and rubber is no exception, is the improvements made to apparatus by the introduction of more advanced instrumentation and automation, in particular the application of computers both to control tests and to handle the data produced. These developments can and do influence the test techniques which are used and this is discussed in Chapter 2 Section 6. Also, whenever appropriate, comment is made on the form of apparatus now available for any particular test and there is a guide to test equipment for rubbers and plastics in a test equipment suppliers directory4. 

Radioactivity, chemiluminescence or fluorescence have traditionally been used to monitor signals with protein arrays. The use of fluorescent dyes allows for increased sensitivity of detection, the ability to multiplex detection of several targets, and easy interfacing with detection instrumentation and automation. Surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy is another alternative, but successful development and commercialization has not yet been achieved. 

Current advanced instrumentation and automation enable food processors to reduce the testing time and cost (Greg Cheng and Merchant, 1995), which means that new and numerous applications of the above methods that employ biosensors can be expected.

It can be concluded from the present state of the art of TLC analysis of synthetic dyes that the methods are mainly limited to the application of traditional TLC technique. Due to the rapidly developing instrumentation and automation of the various steps of TLC analysis and the introduction of coupled methods (TLC-... 

Traditional philosophical theories of knowledge, including those of Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, and Locke, were about the acquisition of knowledge and, more specifically, about methods for acquiring knowledge. The concern for inquiry and its methods continued in nineteenth-century philosophy of science and even influenced the development of several sciences, but that concern all but vanished in twentieth-century philosophy, where it was replaced by an exclusive focus on the notion of justification of belief. In consequence, except for inadvertence, philosophy has been almost entirely removed from the most striking developments in scientific methods during this century the instrumentation and automation of inquiry.

To assure product quality and process safety, modern instrumentation and automation technologies including multimedia interfaces, artificial intelligence and virtual reality will be increasingly adopted. 

The radioactive-tracer technique was perfected for. fluidized-bed application through the development of a computer-aided particle-tracking facility (CAPTF) (Lin, Chen, and Chao, 1985 Moslemian, 1987 Sun, 1989). Considerable effort was expended to develop the efficient photoncounting instrumentation and automated data reduction and processing schemes. In Section 9.2, the principle of radiation detection and a theoretical model of the CAPTF is presented. The instrumentation of the CAPTF and the data reduction schemes are described in Section 9.3. Sample results obtained by the CAPTF are presented in Sections 9.4 and 9.5, and a conclusion is presented in Section 9.6. 

In the opinion of the author, the greatest progress is destined to be in the direction of multi-element atomic absorption instrumentation, and automated analysis. Both of these disciplines are already being explored but not yet with the sophistication that the future will bring.
