Injury prevention administrative controls

A) that such quality control procedures are inadequate to prevent the chemical substance or mixture from presenting such risk of injury, the Administrator may order the manufacturer or processor to revise such quality control procedures to the extent necessary to remedy such inadequacy or... [Pg.855]

NIOSH conducts research and makes recommendations that help prevent work-related injury and illness. NIOSH, established by the OSH Act of 1970, operates under the administrative control of CDC. Although NIOSH and OSHA were created by the same Act of Congress, they operate as distinct agencies with separate responsibilities. However, NIOSH and OSHA often work together toward the common goal of protecting worker safety and health. NIOSH publishes educational resources and guidelines on a number of healthcare- and hospital-related topics. [Pg.72]

A few prominent writers would have you believe that behavior modification, training, and leadership (consisting largely of what is referred to in OSHA literature as administrative controls) are almost the entirety of the practice of safety. But, events of the recent past indicate that several of the big hitters in behavior-based safety have revised their positions and now talk and write about taking a systems approach to safety management (see Chapter 8, Improving Serious Injury and Fatality Prevention ). [Pg.355]

Botulinum toxin injection has been documented as a means to control severe spasticity in various clinical situations. This intervention, for example, can help remove spastic dominance in certain patients so that volitional motor function can be facilitated. For example, judicious administration of botulinum toxin can result in improved gait and other functional activities in selected patients with cerebral palsy, stroke, or traumatic brain injury.7,36,49,78 Even if voluntary motor function is not improved dramatically, reducing spasticity in severely affected muscles may produce other musculoskeletal benefits. For example, injection of botulinum toxin can reduce spasticity so that muscles can be stretched or casted more effectively, thus helping to prevent joint contractures and decreasing the need for surgical procedures such as heel-cord lengthening and adductor release.12,98... [Pg.173]

We examined the in vivo effects of various extracts from Geranii Herba, and of geraniin, the main component of tannin of this herb, on rat liver injury induced by oral administration of peroxidized oil, and on lipid metabolism. As shown in "Table (6)", the administration of peroxidized oil for 5 days caused hyperlipidaemia with elevations of total cholesterol (TC), lipid peroxide (LPO), free fatty acid (FFA) and triglyceride (TG) as compared to the control values. Serum TC, FFA and LPO levels were found to be reduced in the rats orally given the acetone-water (1 1) extract of the leaf and leaf-stem (1 2), or the water extract of the leaf-stem as compared with the rats treated with peroxidized oil for 5 days "Table (6)". These extracts prevented the liver injury with the elevation of CJOT and GPT induced by peroxidized oil "Table (7)". As shown in "Table (8) and Table (9)", geraniin was also found to reduce the levels of serum TC, GOT and GPT in the peroxidized oil-treated rats. [Pg.413]

Housekeeping is the routine care and cleaning that needs to be acted on daily in order for a facility to function safety and properly. In Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulation 29 CFR 1910.38 (b) (3), it states that the employer shall control accumulations of flammable and combustible waste materials and residues so that they do not contribute to a fire emergency. Additionally, housekeeping procedures shall be included in the written fire prevention plan. Additionally, 29 CFR 1926.25 similarly states the need for housekeeping activities at construction locations. Common injuries due to poor housekeeping include slips, trips, and falls. [Pg.157]

The US Health Resources and Services Administration asked the Institute of Medicine (lOM) to review a list of adverse events associated with 8 of the 12 vaccines covered by the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) ami to evaluate the scientific evidence about the event-vaccine relationship. The vaccines covered by VICP included all vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control ami Prevention (CDC) for routine administration in children. Adults who have an adverse event after one of these childhood vaccines also are covered by the program. [Pg.499]

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), part of the Centers for Disease Control, is responsible for conducting research and helping companies prevent work-related illness and injury. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enforces the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard, which specifies safe work conditions, safety training, and effective emergency-response plans. [Pg.180]
