As already stated, due to the nature of the involved chemical elements, a relativistic quantum chemistry approach is required. Indeed, these effects play the main role for orbital energy positioning leading to the observed orbital mixing in the clusters. The relativistic effects induce a contraction and an energy stabilization of the s and p shells and an expansion and destabilization of d and f shells. As a consequence, in a non-relativistic framework, e.g., the 5f(Pu), 6d(Pu) orbitals, are too low in energy, and the 7s(Pu) orbital is too high [Pg.419]

After our paper, Dognon et al. [15] appeared, there have been later studies on An C . The case n = 28 was considered both experimentally and theoretically by Dunk et at. [48] and Ryzhkov et al [49]. Other theoretically considered n values include 20 [50], 24 [51], 26 [52], 36 [53], and 40 [54]. [Pg.420]

The results of Dunk et al [48] provide experimental insight into how endohedral fullerenes are formed in carbon vapor and allow for a complete description of ftillerene formation to be developed. Larger U C2 endohedral metallofullerenes U C36 and U C44 are shown to form with a small probability based on U C28 as their precursor. [Pg.420]

Uranium appears to be very efficient in catalyzing initial fuUerene formation. In addition, if an encapsulating species is small enough to form M C2s, it must also stabilize C28 by charge transfer sufficiently to be observed, or all of the species may grow to larger fullerenes after initial formation in carbon vapor. It begins to be possible to decipher why certain elements more efficiently form endohedral fullerenes than those that are not able to form, or at least not readily form [48], [Pg.421]


Effective temperature (ET ) is a single number representing those combinations of temperature and humidity which are equivalent in terms of comfort. It is defined as the dry-bulb temperature of the environment at 50% relative humidity. Standard effective temperature loci for normally clothed, sedentary persons are plotted on Eigure 3. The sensation of comfort depends in part upon the wetness of one s skin. The possible effects of fluid velocity on galvanic corrosion are sometimes overlooked. Fluid velocity can affect the apparent potential of metals in a given environment. Depending on the environment, a metal under the influence of relatively rapid flow may assume either a more noble or a more active character than that indicated by the galvanic series. Occasionally, this shift in potential may result in galvanic corrosion that would not occur under stagnant or low-flow conditions. [Pg.362]

Fracture is caused by higher stresses around flaws or cracks than in the surrounding material. However, fracture mechanics is much more than the study of stress concentration factors. FLAME EXTINCTION FROM THE UPSTREAM PORTION OF A DROP IN MOTION. In his studies of the influence of relative air velocity on the combustion of liquid fuel spheres, Spalding (51, 56) noted a critical velocity above which flame could not be supported at the upstream portion of the sphere. He observed that the flame blew off and resided solely in the sphere s wake. In tests with kerosine, the air (20° C.) velocity at extinction varied linearly with sphere diameter (range 0.7 to 2.6 cm.), and the ratio Ubi2n was about 100 seconds-1. A similar result is obtained from the data on flame extinction of burning camphor spheres (15, 59). The near proportionality between extinction velocity and diameter was taken as supporting evidence for a theory on flame extinction advanced by Spalding (59). More recent experimental work with porous spheres and n-butyl alcohol as fuel does not support this relationship (1), because it was found that the extinction velocity is proportional to the square root of the drop diameter. [Pg.131]
