Industry trends

The quantity of coproduct acetylene produced is sensitive to both the feedstock and the severity of the cracking process. Naphtha, for example, is cracked at the most severe conditions and thus produces appreciable acetylene up to 2.5 wt % of the ethylene content. On the other hand, gas oil must be processed at lower temperature to limit coking and thus produces less acetylene. Two industry trends are resulting in increased acetylene output (/) the ethylene plant capacity has more than doubled, and (2) furnace operating conditions of higher temperature and shorter residence times have increased the cracking severity. 

On a worldwide basis the printing industry ranks as number four in manufacturing employment. Over 4.5 million people ate employed at mote than 350 thousand sites. In the United States, 1993 employment exceeded 1.5 million, an increase of over 180 thousand jobs in the period of 1982—1993. Similar growth in employment is being experienced worldwide. Table 1 shows industry trends in the United States, which ate typical of those worldwide. These do not include revenues from packaging or office copying. 

There is an industry trend to supply SBR certifiably free of volatile nitrosamines or nitrosatable compounds. This has generally been accomplished by replacing shortstop systems based on carbamates and hydroxyl amines with products that are not based on secondary amines or are secondary amines of high molecular weight, such as dibenzyldithiocarbamate. A more recendy issued patent for ESBR shortstop is based on isopropyUiydroxylamine, a primary amine that does not form nitrosamine (46).

Catalysis is done by an acidic solution of the stabilized reaction product of stannous chloride and palladium chloride. Catalyst absorption is typically 1—5 p-g Pd per square centimeter. Other precious metals can be used, but they are not as cost-effective. The exact chemical identity of this catalyst has been a matter of considerable scientific interest (19—21,23). It seems to be a stabilized coUoid, co-deposited on the plastic with excess tin. The industry trends have been to use higher activity catalysts at lower concentrations and higher temperatures. Typical usage is 40—150 ppm of palladium at 60°C maximum, and a 30—60-fold or more excess of stannous chloride. Catalyst variations occasionally used include alkaline and non-noble metal catalysts. 

The consultants will need to conduct in-depth discussions with company personnel to acquire the data described above, but will bring to the task the skills of years of practice, often employing modern computing techniques, knowledge of industrial trends and undivided attention to the task.

The impact of California s waste reduction efforts have not yet been measured quantitatively. Measuring the true efforts is complicated because it is difficult to attribute statewide waste reduction results specifically to the Waste Reduction Program. Industry representatives. Both drug company and wholesaler representatives can provide valuable information about available products. These representatives often have industry trend data and are familiar with prescribing habits in the local geographic area. Moreover, industry representatives have information about new and soon-to-be-released products. 

There is an industry trend toward dedicating specific personnel to the function of internal audits and quality assessments. This approach allows the assessor or auditor to focus on the compliance of the company and its vendors and contractors as well as maintain an independent role allowing for impartial assessment of all areas, including the QA unit. Those companies whose assessors and auditors also perform QA responsibilities might seriously consider the regular use of an independent assessment group, such as corporate auditors or an independent consultant. A fresh pair of eyes, coupled with extensive exposure to multiple worldwide operations, makes using external auditors, preferably with some former FDA experience a tremendous asset to any company.
