Industry sustainable practices

In the 20 years since the Brunddand report, great developments have taken place in industries toward sustainable practices. As a case in point, the problem of acid rain, an issue of concern in 1987, has improved to a large extent, thanks to catalytic pollution abatement both in stationary and automotive emissions. Catalysis for Green Chemistry and Engineering will continue to have a cracial role in improving the environmental performance of industry [25-27]. Nowadays, catalytic procedures are often implemented according to the green chemistry... [Pg.147]

The European Commission, as part of its policy to encourage industry to adopt more sustainable practices, created the EMAS system in 1993. EMAS was also seen as a move towards stated the EU goal of encouraging industry to adopt more self-regulatory practices and a move away from command and control type central legislation. [Pg.52]

The future image of the industry and society s respect for it will hinge upon a clear demonstration of its belief in and stewardship of the principles of Green Chemistry. Indeed, there is nothing more worthy than our desire to improve our ability to meet healthcare needs for the betterment of everyone through sustainable practices. [Pg.378]

Can industries be trusted to self-regulate the amount of pollution they produce Is government really necessary to enforce these regulations Shouldn t the opinion of the consumer and the economic advantages of sustainable practices be sufficient to motivate industries to protect the environment ... [Pg.606]

Implementation of green chemistry education at the undergraduate level is key to adopting more sustainable practices and hence a more sustainable society 4), This education should be for both science and non-science majors. While certainly those students who are science majors may have a direct route to action in applying green chemistry principles in both research and development, nonscience majors can also benefit since they become aware of the importance of sustainable practices, learn about positive every-day habits, and come to realize that the chemical industry, which in the past (and even currently) was viewed as a major contributor to environmental degradation, is also part of the solution to the problem. [Pg.80]

The polymer industry is also adopting more sustainable practices. The polycarbonate (PC) Lexan is used in cars, appliances, CDs, and DVDs (Fukuoka et al., 2003). The polymer is termed an engineer-... [Pg.264]

Making REEs a sustainable resource will require a careful consideration of the economic, environmental, and societal implications of REE extraction and use. Sustainable practices in the REE industry must be instituted not only to preserve the quality of life in our current society but also to ensure that future generations may enjoy a similar quality of life. [Pg.24]

Currently, the vision that most marketers has led us to believe, that of a closed loop, or cycle, in which the yams never lose their value and recycle indefinitely is simply that - just a vision. Few manufacturers, such a Designtex (with their line of EL fabrics designed to be used without backings) and Victor Innovates (who has pioneered Ecointelligent polyester made without antimony), have taken the time, effort and money needed to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices in the industry so we can one d have synthetic fabrics that are not only recycled, but recyclable. [Pg.124]

Increased international focus on world-leading practices from multiple industries with practical examples, common mistakes to avoid, and new thinking about how to build sustainable safety management systems... [Pg.405]

The business case for the sustainabUity initiatives of a company depends on a variety of issues including industry, supply chain structure, stakeholder expectatiOTis, and organizational culture. Sustainability practices that respond to multiple drivers have the potential to maximize the value of the company. [Pg.275]

The purpose of chemical processes is not to make chemicals The purpose is to make money. However, the profit must he made as part of a sustainable industrial activity which retains the capacity of ecosystems to support industrial activity and life. This means that process waste must be taken to its practical and economic minimum. Relying on methods of waste treatment is usually not adequate, since waste treatment processes tend not so much to solve the waste problem but simply to move it from one place to another. Sustainable industrial activity also means that energy consumption must be taken to its practical and economic minimum. Chemical processes also must not present significant short-term or long-term hazards, either to the operating personnel or to the community. [Pg.399]

Chemical processes will in the future need to be designed as part of a sustainable industrial development which retains the capacity of ecosystems to support industrial activity and life. This book therefore places a high emphasis on waste minimization and energy efficiency in the context of good economic performance and good health and safety practices. [Pg.473]

Thus, methods are now becoming available such that process systems can be designed to manufacture crystal products of desired chemical and physical properties and characteristics under optimal conditions. In this chapter, the essential features of methods for the analysis of particulate crystal formation and subsequent solid-liquid separation operations discussed in Chapters 3 and 4 will be recapitulated. The interaction between crystallization and downstream processing will be illustrated by practical examples and problems highlighted. Procedures for industrial crystallization process analysis, synthesis and optimization will then be considered and aspects of process simulation, control and sustainable manufacture reviewed. [Pg.261]
