Acrylic modifiers for cement impact strength and adhesion to substrates are discussed in reference 211. Both water-soluble acryHc and acrylic emulsion polymers are used in tHe ceramic industry7 as temporary7 binders, deflocculants, and additive components in ceramic bodies and glazes (212) (see Ceramics). [Pg.172]

Acrylic and styrene-acrylic emulsion polymers are typically characterized fiar solids content, viscosity and pH. Commercial products range in solids content from about 35 to 65% by weight, and in viscosity from tens to thousands of centipoise. Solids content is determined gravimetrically. Samples are dried to constant weight in a forced-draft oven, typically at 150 °C, and cooled in a desiccator. Viscosity is conveniently detamined using a Brookfield viscometer. For meaningful viscosity comparisons between various samples, the same spindle size and rate of rotation (shear rate) should be used. [Pg.327]

A majority of the acrylic emulsion polymers used in textile and non-woven applications are crosslinked or cured after film formation to provide wet stroigth, solvent resistance and durability to laundering and dry cleaning. As with architectural coatings binders, the principal monomers used are BA, EA and MMA,... [Pg.335]

Acrylic emulsion polymers have manufacturing versatility as well pressure equipment is not required for their manufacture, and a large variety of monomer addition and polymerization initiation schemes can be used. Colloidal stability of acrylic emulsion polymers can be achieved through a variety of means to impart surface charge or through polymeric stabilizers. [Pg.729]

The compositions of most acrylic and styrene-acrylic emulsion polymers contain from one to three principal building-block monomers (which generally make up over 90% by weight of the backbone) and one or more of the auxiliary or specialty monomers. The building-block monomers mainly determine the hardness (Tg) and hydrophobicity of the polymer. Styrene and the acrylic monomers form amorphous, random copolymers with a Tg that is roughly proportional to the weight fractions and Tg s of the component monomers. Several mathematical equations have been proposed to describe correlations between Tg s and copolymer composition. Perhaps the most well known is the Fox equation [28] ... [Pg.732]

Other Applications. The leather finishing area is a traditional stronghold of acrylic emulsion polymers (226). Acrylics are used throughout the entire process of pigskin leather production the nse of acrylics lends uniformity, break improvement, better durability, and snrface resistance while preserving the natural appearance of the pigskin (227). [Pg.167]
