BPCS/SIS functions that produce a trend analysis of input and output functions. Graphic video displays set-up to indicate process conditions and valve positions assure that the status of the process conditions is announced to the board operator, who may then verify the conditions with the field operator. [Pg.82]

Metrics for this might include number of excursions from statistical process control, but one very useful metric for controllability is process capability, or more accurately, process capability indices. Process capability compares the output of an in-control process to the specification limits by using capability indices. The comparison is made by forming the ratio of the spread between the process specifications (the specification width ) to the spread of the process values. In a six-sigma environment, this is measured by six standard deviation units for the process (the process width ). A process under control is one where almost all the measurements fall inside the specification limits. The general formula for process capability index is ... [Pg.238]

Rather than focusing on the short-time photochemical reactivity, our interest in the spin-forbidden reactions of iron carbonyl fragments has been mainly in the longer-time thermal chemistry of the fragments produced. This is summarized in Scheme 3. As already stated, iron tricarbonyl and tetracarbonyl are known to have triplet ground states, and for many ligands, it is assumed that Fe(CO)3L would also have a triplet ground state. Hence many of the indicated processes are spin-forbidden. [Pg.578]

The research described in this thesis deals with safety management in complex and high-risk organizations. Companies in the chemical process industry handling hazardous substances are chosen as the subject of study. In particular this thesis will focus on the current safety indication process, and how this safety indication process works and its shortfalls. An unreliable indication process, leads automatically to wrong reactions and measures to prevent possible accidents. Increased understanding of this process helps in providing a better basis from which effective measures to prevent accidents can be derived. [Pg.17]

The activation points should be located a minimum of 8 meters (25 ft.) away from a high process hazard location but not more than 5 minutes away from any location within the facility. 5 minutes is taken as the maximum allowable time since historical evidence indicates process vessel rupture may occur after this time period from flame impingement. If risk analysis calculations demonstrate longer vessel rupture periods are expected, longer time periods may be acceptable. [Pg.119]

Process Capability Indices Process capability indices provide a quantitative measure to assess the ability of a process to produce products that meet the specifications. A commonly used process capability index, denoted as Cp, can be calculated as... [Pg.306]

Mustakas et al. (46) evaluated the effects of extruder-processing on nutritional quality, flavor, and stability of the product in an attempt to describe extruder conditions which would be acceptable in all three respects. Urease activity was used as an estimation of trypsin inhibitor activity thus the area between the two urease curves in Figure 2 indicates processing conditions which strike a balance between too much and too little heat treatment, showing optimal nutritional quality. Using the flavor and peroxide value isograms, processing conditions may be chosen such that acceptable flavor and stability may also be achieved. [Pg.252]

Many diverse processes are involved in the transformation of the elements and their compounds in the Earth. Some of the pathways observed are shown in Figure 1, a version of the so-called geochemical cycle . This cycle is very much simplified and is not a closed one. It may also be short-circuited and indicated processes may be very fast on the geological time scale, or, more often as not, occupy very lengthy periods, amounting in some cases to billions of years. [Pg.843]

Figure 2-1 presents a model of the clairvoyance process. The rectangular blocks (also used in subsequent figures) indicate processes or mechanisms of some sort by which information is transformed or used. The arrows indicate the direction of information flow within the model. We will look at this first model in considerable detail because many points relevant to it will also apply to other models. [Pg.41]

Because the material inventory is considered in these indices, process intensification will result in a lower value (greater safety) for either index. However, the indices do also consider other factors, such as temperature and pressure, that... [Pg.497]

A single-number overall index characterizing the inherent safety of the overall process is generated by both proposed inherent safety indices. Process intensification will lower the value of the index (indicating an inherently safer process) because it will reduce the penalty for inventory. If the alternative process results in an increase in the inherent hazard due to other factors, the index will be useful in understanding the inherent safety characteristics of the different alternatives. The relative contributions of the various components of the index to the total value may also be useful in understanding process safety characteristics. Table 3 summarizes the application of this proposed inherent safety index to a number of alternative routes for the manufacture of methyl methacrylate. [Pg.498]

Reactions (2) and (3) indicate processes that regenerate Fe2+ in the catalytic cycle. As long as peroxide is available in the system, the iron species continually cycle between Fe2+ and Fe3+, unless additional reactions result in formation of insoluble iron oxides and hydroxides. The rate of formation of hydroxyl radical can be expressed as ... [Pg.173]

The process parameters and the nominal values of the state variables are given in Table 4.1 (the subscript c indicates process parameters for the condenser). The model of the process is identical (with the exception of the reaction rate expression) to the one developed in Section 4.2.1. The data in Table 4.1 also follow the notation introduced in Section 4.2.1. [Pg.85]

Downward arrows indicate inhibition of the indicated process, upward arrows indicate increase. In studies that did not determine the effect of a drug on its molecular targets in the animal model, this was done in intact cells. See Table 6.2. [Pg.149]

The decay series from fU to 2g Pb. Each nuclide in the series except 2 Pb is unstable, and the successive transformations (shown by the arrows) continue until 2gfPb is finally formed. Note that horizontal arrows indicate processes where/ is unchanged, while diagonal arrows signify that both A and Z change. [Pg.984]

The overall geochemical particulars of the formation indicate processes of deep differentiation of the material in the formation of the iron-formations. [Pg.27]

The existence of deposits of hematite in the Oxia Palus region, as revealed by TES (Christensen et al., 2000b), probably indicates processes requiring water. Magnetic measurements of dust by Mars landers (e.g., Madsen etal., 1999) indicate iron oxides, so the surface of Mars is highly oxidized. [Pg.607]

The process safety professional will have primary interest in the data that indicates process safety system performance. This audience includes both process safety professionals at a given site as well as those who have multiple-site or corporate responsibilities. Process safety professionals often document and report selected metrics, but much of the raw data is generated by others, such as operations and maintenance personnel. It is important for the process safety professional to reach agreement with those generating the data on how that data is transmitted to him or her. Issues to resolve in developing a data exchange plan include, but are not limited to ... [Pg.111]

In the QA context, limits are established to trigger specific actions, or outcomes. The alert (warning) limit is the point at which the operator should become alerted to the possibility of a deteriorating trend. When an action limit is exceeded, the operator must take action to identify and correct the condition(s) that are causing a verified trend before a fail limit is reached and the data fail to indicate process control and support continued production. In a well-designed and executed process, however, such a fail limit should never be exceeded, except in the event of a sudden and catastrophic breakdown of a critical process control component. [Pg.2301]

The equilibrium constant is equal to the solubility product K, at 1 atm. pressure, and hence the standard free energy change AF of the indicated process is given by — RT In (cf. 45i). [Pg.490]
