Greater Safety

Where greater safety for equipment and personnel against a likely occurrence of fire is a pre-requisite FRLS coating is used on practically all types of cables described above, as in IEEE 38.3. lEC 60332 I and lEC 60754-1. This coating will restrict ihe spread of fire and produee a low smoke. 

The use of electrochemical protection in the chemical industry started about 20 years ago, which is somewhat recent, compared with its use for buried pipelines 40 years ago. Adoption was slow because the internal protection has to be tailored to the individual plant, which is not the case with the external protection of buried objects. Interest in internal protection came from the increasing need for greater safety for operating plants, increased demands for corrosion resistance, and larger plant components. While questions of its economy cannot generally be answered (see Section 22.6), the costs of electrochemical protection are generally less than the cost of equivalent and reliable coatings or corrosion-resistant materials. 

An inherently safer process offers greater safety potential, often at a lower cost. However, selection of an inherently safer technology does not guarantee that the actual implementation of that technology will result in a safer operation than an alternate process which is inherently safer. The traditional strategy of providing layers of protection for an inherently more hazardous process can be quite effective, although the expenditure of resources to install and maintain the layers of protection...

Sometimes old pressure vessels are used as storage tanks. It would seem that by using a stronger vessel than is necessary we achieve greater safety. But this may not be the case, as if the vessel fails, it w ill do so more. spectacularly (see Section 2.2 a). 

Special attention was also paid to the search for operation in the explosive regime as micro reactors are said to have much greater safety here. In this way, improvements in terms of space-time yield were expected. 

Of ultimate importance are the full reports of the clinical studies in humans and their results. These data will be treated statistically for their validity. The number of studies for a specific compound or combination of compounds will vary with the type of drug being tested, as will the number of tests needed to appraise relative or absolute safety and to clearly demonstrate efficacy. The basic requirement is the proof of safety and efficacy of the product being submitted under the NDA system. A drug that does not contribute to therapy, such as a new antihistamine that does not demonstrate greater safety or efficacy, or both, compared with drugs already on the market, will have a difficult or impossible time achieving approval.

The belief that risks from reactor accident are small is based on the past safety record of nuclear reactors, results of on-going probabilistic risk analyses, indicators of improvement in reactor performance, and the prospect of still greater safety in a next generation of nuclear reactors. 

These instruments, designed by CSIRO and Milestone, include, in addition to pressure and temperature measurement and control, a number of other features allowing for greater safety and reproducibility of reaction conditions, such as stirring to minimize temperature gradients, rapid cool-down at the end of the heating period and energy shut-down if temperatures or pressures exceed safe levels. 

Overall, the microreactor provides greater safety for individuals and equipment and reduces the likelihood of loss of process and the consequent disruption and even loss of sales that can follow. In common with other fine chemical manufacturers, most pharmaceutical companies have programs to capture the benefits of flow microreactors as adjuncts to or even replacements for their current batch methods for scaling up production of candidate molecules to satisfy clinical and manufacturing needs. This paper attempts to demonstrate that microreactors can be deployed more widely in pharmaceutical R D than as a tool for enhanced production and that they have the potential to underpin significant paradigm shifts in both early- and late-phase R D. 

Probably the greatest advances in psychiatric medications of the last 15 years have involved the neurotransmitter serotonin. First was the arrival of serotonin-specific antidepressants with fewer side effects and greater safety than their predecessors. More recently, atypical antipsychotics have highlighted the importance of serotonin-dopamine interactions in the optimal treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. While these are indeed significant advances, medications that alter serotonin activity are not without their own side effect burden. 

The hazard to the population therefore increases throughout the trial process as more people are given greater cumulative amounts of the drug in a less-controlled and monitored manner. However, with each additional patient treated, the clinical experience with the drug also increases, providing a greater safety database in the most relevant species, that is, man. The risk... 

The chief interest of petroleum chemists in the information presented here may be in the fact that, although the earlier kerosene type of petroleum derivatives mixture will produce insecticide fogs—and is still used successfully for them—an analysis of fog production and its use, from biological, physical, chemical, and mechanical standpoints, has resulted in the evolution of special fog oils which combine higher DDT solvency, specific insecticidal potency, greater safety, and greater chemical and physical stability with consequent limited and therefore more desirable particle size range, at known temperatures and pressures. 

The SSRIs and other newer antidepressants have replaced the TCAs as the antidepressants of first and even second choice for most physicians. The reason is that they have greater safety and better tolerability rather than efficacy. There is still no class of antidepressant, however, that is better than TCAs in terms of efficacy. Another advantage of all newer antidepressants, except the phenylpiperazines (i.e., nefazodone and trazodone) and bupropion over TCAs is the ability to start with a dose that is usually effective rather than having to start at a subtherapeutic dose and adjust upward later. 

It was also found that mixtures containing a large amount of ammonium nitrate (ammonium nitrate explosives) ensure much greater safety than dynamites or chlorate and perchlorate explosives. 

Carbonits had a negative oxygen balance on the wrong assumption that incomplete combustion gives greater safety for use in mines, by lowering the heat and temperature of explosion.
