Corrosion, fouling, and deposition processes of some degree most probably will have been steadily taking place for some time prior to the evaluation being made. If an index or model is to be used, the makeup water source should always be the starting point and cycled-up cooling water composition calculated from this point (despite the problems of accurately assessing the cycled-up water pH). [Pg.118]

If a reliable process model is available and can provide solutions in real time, the model can be used to provide the corrected setpoint trajectories for u without decouphng or empirical tuning of controller gains. If a process performance index is defined, then the controller action can be computed directly by inverting the process model. For instance, if it is assumed that the current process states [x(f),y(f)] are known and that it is desired to reach the optimum reference trajectory after tf time units, then Equations 8.18b and 8.35 can be written as... [Pg.352]

From an appropriate process modelling it follows that the system (1.1) has the differential index 1. Usually it is a stiff system, whose discretization and linearization yields systems of equations with sparse nonsymmetric Jacobian matrices. The systems can comprise several 10 000 equations and are hierarchically structured into subsystems in accordance with the functional units of the chemical plant ... [Pg.68]

It is usually better to develop or reformulate the DAE process model so that it is index 1, rather than rely on algorithms to reduce the index automatically, as automated index reduction techniques can be computationally expensive. To develop index 1 models, we attempt to avoid certain simplifying assumptions or variable specihcations. [Pg.546]

Results indicate that all GNM models were able to find an optimally set of inputs close to the true optimum and maintained this conditions over the time. It can be observed that the deviations respects to the nominal optimum are more severe when more inexact is the process model using in the RTO. Other issue observed is the sensitive of the RTO/GNM system to the initial conditions in the optimizer. In order to compare the performance of each model considered in this work, a dynamic performance index, deEned as the total profit obtained over the time window was calculated and shown in Table 1. Results show that a more exact model brings best performance, specifically the three reaction model. [Pg.398]

Model based control schemes such as model predictive control are highly related to the accuracy of the process model. A regional-knowledge index is proposed in this study and applied in the analysis of dynamic artificial neural network models in process control. To tackle the extrapolation problem and assure stability of the control system, we propose to run a neural adaptive controller in parallel with a model predictive control. A coordinator weights the outputs of these two controllers to make the final control decision. The proposed analysis method and the modified model predictive control architecture have been applied to a neutralization process and excellent control performance is observed in this highly nonlinear system. [Pg.533]

Quality (simplicity) indices Similar to the case of performance indices, one can define other real-valued indices which characterize the quality or the simplicity of a set of functionally equivalent process models such that a quality index is defined for every member in... [Pg.757]

Minimality for nonlinear state-space models Lumped process models with differential index 1 can be described by input-affine state-space models, where the notion of minimality is related to the number of state variables necessary and sufficient to produce a given input-output behaviour. This means, that one naturally uses the single quality index = dim x = n for both linear and nonlinear state-space models and orders the functionally equivalent models accordingly. [Pg.757]

Note that the squared relationship which was initially used to model the degree of difficulty in obtaining more capable tolerances for a given manufacturing route and product design is being returned by the power law. Similarly, a relationship between the process capability index Cp and q for the components analysed is shown in... [Pg.57]

A Newtonian liquid of viscosity 0.1 N s/m2 is flowing through a pipe of 25 mm diameter and 20 m in lenglh, and the pressure drop is 105 N/m2. As a result of a process change a small quantity of polymer is added to the liquid and this causes the liquid to exhibit non-Newtonian characteristics its rheology is described adequately by the power-law model and the flow index is 0.33. The apparent viscosity of the modified fluid is equal to ihc viscosity of the original liquid at a shear rate of 1000 s L... [Pg.129]

The distance of each reflection from the center of the pattern is a function of the fiber-to-film distance, as well as the unit-cell dimensions. Therefore, by measuring the positions of the reflections, it is possible to determine the unit-cell dimensions and, subsequently, index (or assign Miller indices to) all the reflections. Their intensities are measured with a microdensitometer or digitized with a scanner and then processed.8-10 After applying appropriate geometrical corrections for Lorentz and polarization effects, the observed structure amplitudes are computed. This experimental X-ray data set is crucial for the determination and refinement of molecular and packing models, and also for the adjudication of alternatives. [Pg.318]

We now describe a relatively simple MD model of a low-index crystal surface, which was conceived for the purpose of studying the rate of mass transport (8). The effect of temperature on surface transport involves several competing processes. A rough surface structure complicates the trajectories somewhat, and the diffusion of clusters of atoms must be considered. In order to simplify the model as much as possible, but retain the essential dynamics of the mobile atoms, we will consider a model in which the atoms move on a "substrate" represented by an analytic potential energy function that is adjusted to match that of a surface of a (100) face-centered cubic crystal composed of atoms interacting with a Lennard-Jones... [Pg.221]

The HlV-1 protease is responsible for processing the protein precursors to the enzymes (integrase, protease and reverse transcriptase) and the structural proteins of the HIV-1 virus. Maw and Hall found that topological indices provide rehable QSAR models for the IC50 data of 32 HIV-1 protease inhibitors [29]. The best QSAR model, with r = 0.86, s=0.60 and q = 0.79, was obtained with the shape index Ka, the connechvity index the sum of HE-state indices for ah groups that act as... [Pg.93]

A homogeneity index or significance coefficienf has been proposed to describe area or spatial homogeneity characteristics of solids based on data evaluation using chemometrical tools, such as analysis of variance, regression models, statistics of stochastic processes (time series analysis) and multivariate data analysis (Singer and... [Pg.129]
