Once the region to be scanned is selected, the pattern can be automatically indexed with a separate window in the software interface (Fig. 6c) permits the user to define the scanning step resolution or the time that the reflection can be measured in accumulation mode. After measurement, all reflections are given with intensities corrected from background.

Automatic diffraction analysis is available through the Diffraction Image Screening Tool and Library (DISTL) (Zhang et al., 2006). DISTL incorporates automatic indexing and identification of extraneous features such as ice rings, and provides an estimate of the resolution of the diffraction data. Neural networks have also been tested for the evaluation of crystal quality (Berntson et al., 2003). 

Use of non-standard abbreviations might let the paper go unnoticed, as the abbreviation in the title or in the text might not be recognized by automatic indexing services (e.g. MASS NMR instead of the common MAS NMR or MASNMR similarly, SSNMR for Solid-State NMR could mean high-resolution or broad-line NMR).

Needless to say, different crystal systems should be tested from the highest to the lowest symmetry until a satisfactory solution is found. More often than not, automatic indexing yields multiple solutions, generally with different figures of merit, and the final decision is still up to the researcher. 

Zone search method begins with searching for one-dimensional and two-dimensional zones and then builds three-dimensional zones using common rows in two-dimensional lattices. When a three-dimensional zone (lattice) is found, it is used in an attempt to index all observed Bragg reflections. This automatic indexing technique is more sophisticated when compared to a trial-and-error approach, but it is still based on Eq. 5.1. First, the analysis of numerical relationships between the observed Q-values is made to identify zones that are invariant with respect to two indices, for example AOO, h 0, OkO and so on. Second, these are combined to identify zones which are invariant with respect to one index and, finally zones where all three indices... 

Automatic indexing programs usually produce more than one solution and the following criteria should be considered when deciding which one is the best, or in other words, which solution we believe represents the true unit cell ...

An interesting encoding format called CML (chemical markup language) which aims at structuring chemical information in a form far beyond what is possible within HTML, has been proposed." CML is based on XML and consequently has some similarity to HTML. The automatic indexing of chemical information from the original document without human intervention becomes much more feasible with this type of approach.
