Improve Ergonomics

To improve warehouse ergonomics, an effective program should be developed that includes  

Purchasing. This must be coordinated to ensure that the proper ergonomic equipment is obtained. In many cases, ergonomic-related equipment must be purchased for workstations or material handling. It is important to select quality equipment. There are many vendors that make quality equipment, and there are others that only presume to do so. A wise investment must be preceded by a search for the best equipment. Thoughtful purchasing can minimize or reduce any risks of poor selection. State-of-the-art devices will definitely make jobs easier. 

Supervisors are to use this form to assess various jobs in the warehouse to determine if ergonomic improvements are needed.

Because safety is the focus, and the team will be asked to observe and improve the work methods in order to attain their goal of 15 safety improvements, ergonomic assessment training is appropriate. Further improvement of this principle of factory-metered blistered unit doses was achieved when GlaxoSmithKline developed the Accuhaler device (also named Diskus in some countries (Fig. 8.7). This multiple-dose DPI device contains a blister strip of 60 unit doses that is transported to the next filled unit dose by pulling a small ergonomic lever prior to inhalation. The powder is presented for aerosolization by peeling back the foil from the blister, which is superior to simple piercing because it is not associated with variability in foil flap shape and device retention. The dose indicator on top of the device tells the patient how many doses are left and decreases each time the lever is pulled. This means that as with most other devices, operation of the dose indicator is associated with the loading operation and not with the inhalation maneuver. 

The psychological and physiological limitations and capabilities constitute the ergonomics or human factors. It is the most important part of the occupational safety and health program. This is to evaluate personnel capabilities and improve human safety, comfort, and productivity in the workplace. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) are the results of ergonomics and limitations of the human body to a sudden change or continuous working on a physical job, especially where most of the jobs are carried out manually. 

By taking existing tools and by asking fundamentally new questions, the IMPROVE project tried to balance between relevance for industry on the one and scientific focus for research on the other hand. Usability is specifically addressed by carefully regarding application-specific aspects and by the ergonomic evaluation of intended concepts and resulting tool functionality. Model and tool integration is still a hot topic of practice and research. As shown in Chap. 7, results of the IMPROVE project can be transferred to industrial practice.

However, while QI teams primarily focus on activities related to identifying, designing, and implementing improvements in both work processes and products/services, PE teams primarily focus on improvement of working conditions.
