However, if air sampling estabHshes that the lead exposure concentration is excessive, engineering controls (such as improved ventilation), adrninistrative controls (such as job rotation), and work practices (such as improved personal hygiene of workers) have to be appHed to comply with the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of the OSHA standard. 

Besides lead, there may be a variety of other substances that a worker may be exposed to. Earlier in this chapter we mentioned the possibility of mobile laboratories. If your site does have a mobile lab, there are a variety of other regulations that should be considered. Of course, hazard communication comes into play. A typical laboratory can have volumes of material safety data sheets in its libraries. Besides hazard communication, you should determine whether a chemical hygiene plan is a requirement. In addition, we need to consider how the laboratory might affect the site emergency plan. 

Although the first two possibilities can lead to severe problems in the fermentation of amino acids, these problems can be prevented by using proper plant design maintenance of hygienic conditions throughout the operation reservation of large batches of raw material with uniform qualities. Much more severe (and much more difficult to control) are the last two possibilities which will now be discussed in more detail.

In some situations, if good plant hygiene is not maintained, fungal spores can also become established in and around the Fourdrinier wire. These can develop into large surface colonies which can become dislodged and transfer onto the paper sheet during formation. Again, this can lead to paper sheet failure.

The inclusion of the minimum label instruction might also be considered as a matter of general working hygiene for all products for which application leads to wetting of the plant surface.

The ACGIH also notes that if a child s blood lead level remains elevated, the child may be at increased risk of cognitive deficits (ACGIH 1998). The ACGIH has adopted BEIs for various substances. The BEI for a substance is an industrial hygiene reference value to be used in evaluating potential health hazards.

Keppler et al. (2001) found that there is less cannibalism in littered nests. This is probably due to the fact that hens in the standard nests, where the eggs disappear immediately after laying, are more restless, which may lead to pecks directed to the cloaca. With littered nests, there are also fewer misplaced eggs and the eggs seem to be cleaner (Keppler et al., 2001). However, the hygiene levels tend to be higher in non-littered nests, as there could be problems with broken eggs in nest litter and/or with ectoparasites (see Chapter 12). 

Even simple tasks like closing the curtains when the sun shines into a room or lowering the temperature when nobody is in the house can lead to substantial saving of 20-30% on the utility bill. Electronic faucets are not only more hygienic but also save water through the use of time out settings and low-flow aerators (see Fig. 6.9). 

The maturation step was considered to be the bottleneck of the process. The residence time in this process takes up to 6 hours, limiting the flexibility of the plant. Moreover, one should realize that this process step takes place after the pasteurization step. Hence the hygienic requirements for this process step are quite strict and the capital costs for this part is high. We wanted to do a redesign of this process, leading to the same product, but ideally without the maturation step. This was done by applying the process synthesis techniques discussed above. 

The hazard from lead is very high, particularly in conditions where the general standard of hygiene is low and lead dust is allowed to accumulate or lead fume is emitted uncontrolled. The recommended permissible limit for concentration of lead in the workplace for lead dust and fume is 0.15 milligrams per cubic meter of air.
