All these methods provide the maximum required rate of bleed-off at all times of the year, and so will waste water at light load conditions. The user should be aware of the essential nature of bleed-off, since cases often occur in dry weather of misguided persons closing off the bleed to save water . 

Where water is evaporated from a circuit, such as a cooling tower, evaporative condenser, or humidifier, it must be remembered that there is no way of avoiding a steady bleed-off or frequent flushing, to restrict the concentration of dissolved solids. Much trouble arises from the efforts of well-wishing but misguided persons who stop the flow of bleed-off to save water . 

Medium recycling is required to save water, save unused nutrients, and save cm waste treatment costs (spent medium contains unused organic nutrients and so would otherwise have to be treated to reduce BOD). 

The water availability is important if artificial snow is used. It is however possible to save water in the pond during a period and use it for snow making when the temperature is low enough. It is also be possible to reuse water if pollution problems can be handled. 

Use the rinse bath water again in a different area. For example, if there is a line with a chromic acid etch bath followed by counter-flow rinse baths and a neutralizer bath followed by counter-flow rinse baths, use the dirtiest rinse after the neutralizer bath and pipe it to the rinse baths after the chromic acid tank. This saves water and reduces sludge. 

Spraying or aerating the rinses uses less water and does a better job. Also, counter-flow rinses will save water. 

A typical evaporative recovery system consists of an evaporator, a feed pump, and a heat exchanger. Plating solution or rinsewater containing dilute plating chemicals is circulated through the evaporator. The water evaporates and concentrates the plating chemicals for reuse. In open evaporator systems, the water evaporates and mixes with air and is released to the atmosphere. It may be necessary to vent the contaminated airstream to a ventilation/scrubber treatment system prior to release. In enclosed evaporators the water is condensed from the air and can be reused in rinses, which further increases savings. Water reuse is preferred whenever possible. 

Even simple tasks like closing the curtains when the sun shines into a room or lowering the temperature when nobody is in the house can lead to substantial saving of 20-30% on the utility bill. Electronic faucets are not only more hygienic but also save water through the use of time out settings and low-flow aerators (see Fig. 6.9).

Chemicals may also supply more general information about a creature s environment. Salmon return from the sea to their native stream to spawn, guided by the distinctive odor of their birthplace. Thirsty animals follow their noses to locate life-saving water. Other... 

Pots on display Vintage terra-cotta pots can be as attractive as the plants within them, and many gardeners collect them avidly. Clay pots do, however, dry out guite guickly to save water, display them somewhere that is shaded during the hottest part of the day. 

The volume of wastewater produced from a potable water treatment plant (either a conventional sedimentation filtration plant or an innovative flotation filtration plant) amounts to about 15% of a plant s total flow. Total wastewater recycle for production of potable water may save water and cost, and solve wastewater discharge problems [15,35-38]. 

Ammonia (NH3) is a relatively strong base, and at physiological pH values it is mainly present in the form of the ammonium ion NH4 (see p. 30). NH3 and NH4 are toxic, and at higher concentrations cause brain damage in particular. Ammonia therefore has to be effectively inactivated and excreted. This can be carried out in various ways. Aquatic animals can excrete NH4 directly. For example, fish excrete NH4 via the gills (ammonotelic animals). Terrestrial vertebrates, including humans, hardly excrete any NH3, and instead, most ammonia is converted into urea before excretion ureotelic animals). Birds and reptiles, by contrast, form uric acid, which is mainly excreted as a solid in order to save water uricotelic animals). 

Biodiversity may also be fostered when the ecosystem is unstable, like a pond subjected to alternating periods of dryness and wetness, populated by plants giving C, or C4 metabolites, or shifting to this biosynthetic mode according to the availability of COj and the need of saving water (Keeley 1998). 

While reactive rinsing can help to save water and improve rinsing efficiency, it must be used with caution, because precipitation problems can occure when acid and alkaline solutions are mixed. 

To measure any water loss from a toilet leak (see item 3 in 20 Ways To Save Water on page 573 to see how to determine if a toilet is leaking), mark the level of water in the filled tank, then turn off the toilet s water source. Wait for several hours, recording your wait time in minutes. Estimate the volume of water lost by multiplying the drop in water height by the distance across the tank front and then by the tanks front-to-back distance, using units of centimeters for all three distances to get your answer in cubic centimeters. To convert to liters, divide this number by 1000 cubic centimeters/liter. Then divide this volume in liters by the number of minutes it took for this volume to leak out of the tank this gives you the number of liters lost each minute. Multiply this rate by 1440 minutes/day to arrive at the number of liters lost each day. 

At the kindergarten and primary school class level the active water cycle is a suitable topic, along with simple measures by which we can save water. In middle school classes the man and water topic may be developed and visits to neighboring natural water assets as well as coverage of the water supply issues are appropriate. At the high school level the global water cycle can be tackled, and mini research projects are suitable. A list of examples may be drawn from section 18.4.1.

Produced polymer concentrations peaked at 400 to 900 mg/L, approximately half of the injected concentration. As mentioned earlier, the produced water with polymer may be re-injected to save water cost and polymer cost. 

Kidneys save water when water is limited they will excrete a lot of water when water is plentiful. 

Likewise, there is an optimization that occurs within an organism to conserve scarce nutrients. Iron, for instance, is recycled from worn-out red blood cells to be used by new red blood cells. The kidney reabsorbs glucose, bicarbonate, some sodium (depending on intake), potassium, and chloride in order to conserve them and reuse than. Desert animals save water by excreting a very concentrated urine.
