Metriol (Pentaglycerol, 2-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-methyl-l, 3-propanediol, Methyltrimethylol-methane). H3G.C(CH20H)3 mw 120.15 white needles from abs ale mp 199° (sublimes without decompn). Was first prepd by Hosaeus (Ref 2) by condensing formaldehyde and propionic aldehyde in cold aq soln in the presence of lime. Metriol is v sol in w, ale and acet ac is insol in eth. It may be nitrated to an expl trinitrate, and acetylated to a nonexpl triacetate Refs 1) Beil 1, 520 2) H. Hosaeus, Ann... [Pg.139]

Polymers. AH nitro alcohols are sources of formaldehyde for cross-linking in polymers of urea, melamine, phenols, resorcinol, etc (see Amino RESINS AND PLASTICS). Nitrodiols and 2-hydroxymethyl-2-nitro-l,3-propanediol can be used as polyols to form polyester or polyurethane products (see Polyesters Urethane polymers). 2-Methyl-2-nitro-l-propanol is used in tires to promote the adhesion of mbber to tire cord (qv). Nitro alcohols are used as hardening agents in photographic processes, and 2-hydroxymethyl-2-nitro-l,3-propanediol is a cross-linking agent for starch adhesives, polyamides, urea resins, or wool, and in tanning operations (17—25). Wrinkle-resistant fabric with reduced free formaldehyde content is obtained by treatment with... [Pg.61]

One of the earhest extensions of the list of possible buffers for biological work was Gomori s (1946) proposal of 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and 2-amino-2-methyl-l, 3-propanediol. The use of peptides such as glycylglycine and, more particularly, N-dimethyl-leucylglycine (Leonis, 1948) as biological buffers is now of little more than historical interest because a much wider range of suitable, readily water-soluble buffer substances having soluble calcium salts has been developed. [Pg.29]

Similar solubility behavior of polyhydroxy compounds was shown in fused acetates by Burton and Crowell. Burton observed that solubility of several organic compounds at 200°C, in (Li, Na, K) acetate eutectic (mp 180°C) increases with the number of hydroxyl groups and with acidity. In weight percent the following approximate solubilities were determined methanol, 0.05% 2,4-dinitroaniline and 4-nitroaniline, < 0.5% hydroquinone and resorcinol, 1% 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-l, 3-propanediol and 2-amino-2-methyl-l,3-propanediol, I0% trimethylolethane and pentaerythritol were miscible in all proportions above their melting points. [Pg.525]

Formylation of amines and alcohols. Behai,8 discoverer of the reagent, found that it reacts unidirectionally with simple alcohols to produce alkyl formates free from acetates. Hurd et al. J found that acetic-formic anhydride (prepared from formic acid and ketene) reacts quantitatively with aniline to give formanilide. Another study10 established that acetic-formic anhydride mixes endothermally with 2-nitro-2-methyl-l-propanol, exothermally with 2-nitro-2-methyl-l,3-propanediol, and displays no appreciable temperature effect with either 2-nitro-l-butanol or tris-(hydroxymethyl)-nitromethane. Formic esters are favored by avoiding a high reaction temperature and by not using sulfuric acid as catalyst. The mixed anhydride has been used for the preparation of formyl fluoride.11... [Pg.10]
